EastEnders: What if Steve McFadden had left in 1999 instead of Ross Kemp?

Basically, the pub was a focal point, "The Queen Victoria" - Phil eventually lost as the landlord with Grant, and the opposite could easily have happened with Grant eventually becoming the sole owner of "The Arches".

Kathy/Grant would have had "Kathygate" in 1997-1998, 1999 and eventual Kathy/Grant marriage.

Kathy would have aborted Phil's baby and Phil NEVER knowing the gender of the baby, Sharon/Grant would have had a lesbian daughter and Sharon and/or Grant struggling to come to terms with it.

From 1999, Grant/would have took on Phil's good side as the Grant/Phil hybrid, "Sharongate" would NEVER have happened and instead been a one night stand, and left it there.

The 1999 Mitchell Car Crash, Phil/Grant argued etc as they did:-
The least they could have done with the story brought Sharon/Letitia Dean back to have it out with Kathy/Gillian Taylforth also - It's almost like deciding between the Manchester United side of 1994 and 1999, so the 1994 Manchester United side and a better improved EastEnders 1999 Mitchell Car Crash WITH the involvement of Sharon getting to grips with Kathy would have worked better in addition with Phil/Grant clashing ALSO.

That would have been good the character is well past his sell by date and a 62 year old hardman is laughable.
