Eric Bristow - The Crafty Cockney - Has Died

Darts legend Eric Bristow, a five-time world champion, has died of a suspected heart attack.

The Professional Darts Corporation issued this statement:

“The Professional Darts Corporation is deeply saddened to announce that five-time World Champion Eric Bristow MBE passed away on Thursday evening following a heart attack.

Arguably the sport’s first superstar player, Bristow, 60, was World Champion five times between 1980-1986 and also won five World Masters titles during an outstanding career.

Bristow was one of the founder players when the PDC (then World Darts Council) was formed in 1993 as the sport's leading stars broke away from the British Darts Organisation.”

Truly shocking news to wake up to this morning, in an era with so many great players Bristow did very well to win five world titles. He would undoubtedly have won even more had his career not been prematurely ended by dartitis.

He would have been 61 later this month.

One of the all-time greats in his all-round contribution to darts, not only with his supreme talent but then scouting and nurturing the talent of Phil Taylor.

Bristow was part of a mighty era in darts along with John Lowe, Jocky Wilson, Bobby George, Bob Anderson, Keith Deller and Cliff Lazarenko.

No, he was treble twenty!

I know what you mean - he seemed to have been around forever and most of his contemporaries such as Bobby George and John Lowe are now in their 70s.

Bristow would have only been in his twenties in his 1980s heyday.

Yes he was very much the youngest of that era although Keith Deller would have been closer to him in terms of age.

He seems to have been around since i was little and I also didnt realise he was only 60,

personally have never really got the appeal of darts but when you watch it on TV, its packed full!

He did a lot for the sport, Im sure they will honour his contribution in some way

Much of darts' current popularity today harks right back to its original golden era - Eric Bristow played a huge part in bringing darts out of the dark ages.
