Huge fire hits Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

Fortunately, it seems that "only" the spire and the roof were destroyed. They're already talking of rebuilding them. But of course, it won't be the same.

It's heartbreaking when such old buildings or landmarks are destroyed. One little spark and it can all go up in flames.

As shocked as I was last night, I am very relieved now that the damages were limited. Worst case scenario didn't happen. Phew!

I spoke with a work colleague today as he and his wife had visited this iconic building just a few years ago. There was so much to take in they visit Notre Dame a couple of times. I know they can rebuild but we cannot just replace 850 years of history.

Thoughts are with the people of France.

Here in France we are all shocked' ,such a beautiful cathedral so sad to see years of history gone in a few moment by the fire , I went some years ago and when so beautiful, so it's really heartbreaking ,they said it will be rebuilt of course it,s a great thing but I don't think it will be like before ,anyway great job from the fire fighters and thanks everybody for the thoughts to my country

This is just so so sad. I couldn't believe my eyes watching it on the news last night. I make a point of visiting cathedrals and basilicas wherever I go and Notre Dame was one of, if not the most, spectacular of them all. As one commentator said on the news not just a great loss for France but a great loss for the world.

I was also sad to hear about this last night. I visited the Notre Dame back in 2000 when I first went to Paris. Last night I looked in my old photo albums and found a photo from inside of the building with the iconic rose window. It's so sad to think of that it's now completely destroyed and right before Easter too!

My thoughts goes out to the people of France.
Even if people around the globe is deeply affected by this tragedy too. It was after all an UNESCO heritage site, which means that it was a place of interest for the rest of the world too.

For some reason when I heard of the fire last night this song poped into my mind and it was oddly comforting listening to it:

Finally I want to thank all the firefighters who did a terrific job saving as much of the building and historic artefacts as they possibly could. It is because of them that the building is still standing.

I find it hard to comprehend just how many old buildings are going on fire in the last while. The Art School in Glasgow recently caught fire as did another historic building in Liverpool.

Rumour has it that the Notre Dame fire started after renovation work began. It's just horrific for anyone involved. Lovely post and sentiments @Karin Schill
