Okay up next movies adapted on the works of this man:

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England and was baptized on 26 April 1564. He died in the same town as he was born on 23rd April, 1616 at the age of 52.

Shakespeare got married at the age of 18 and had three children. He worked at a theater company called The King’s Men in London, England. The theater company built their own theater along the river Thames which was called The Globe Theater. It still exists today.

During his career he wrote 39 plays, most of them comedies or histories but also some tragedies. Many of his plays have been adapted into movies. But which one of the movies based on his plays is your favorite?

How close to the original stories do the film adaptions need to be? Would a movie like The Lion King count, as it's basically Hamlet but with lions? Or is such movies too far from the original to count?

Good question. I do think that "The Lion King" is a bit farfetched as I have never seen any Shakespeare connection. I mean if The Lion King counts so does Dallas since it's been pointed out that Bobby and Pam were like Romeo and Juliett. So I think for this round we are looking for movies that are actually adapted from Shakespeares plays and not just movies that has Shakespearan qualities.

Good question. I do think that "The Lion King" is a bit farfetched as I have never seen any Shakespeare connection.

Never? A nice king with a nice crown prince. The evil uncle who kills the king, blames the prince & takes over the crown himself. How have you missed the connection? It's a copy of Hamlet. Even with the love story. Hamlet & Ophelia = Simba & Nala.

However, I do agree that it's not really a Hamlet adaptation. Different names, different setting, different twists & turns etc.

Well I think I have probably missed it since I haven't watched the lion king in like 20 years or so. But interesting parallels so thanks for pointing it out.

I've only seen Romeo + Juliet (1996), so I can't make a list this round.
I've read more Shakespeare plays than I've seen film adaptations.

Well even if you've only watched one movie it still counts.
But yeah there are apparently lots to chose from as there is approx. 410 Shakespeare movie adaptions, meaning that he is the most adapted of all the authors.

Anyway after giving it some thoughts here is my Shakespeare list:

1. Taming of the Shrew (1967)
I really enjoy the way Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton play off each other in this movie. Their chemistry is great and the movie feels modern and funny but without losing it's traditional setting. It's my favorite Shakespeare movie simply because I've rewatched it several times.

2. West Side Story (1961)
A bit far-fetched and not a true adaption language wise but I can't help but loving this movie so I have to list it.

3. Romeo and Juliet (1968)
I prefer this version to the more modern one since it has a traditional setting and feel to it.

4. Romeo + Juliet (1996)
When I was in High School one of our teachers took us to the cinema to watch this movie. I was a bit disappointed with the modern setting. But oh well getting to watch Leo Di Caprio in class is never wrong!

5. Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Another movie that I watched with school and I loved it.

6. Richard III (1955)
Laurence Olivier's adaption of this movie. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

7. Henry V (1944)
Another Laurence Olivier adaption.

8. The Tempest (1960) TV Movie
Richard Burton stars in this adaption so I have seen it.

9. King Lear (1983) TV Movie
Laurence Olivier's adaption of it. Feels more like a theater play than a movie.

10. The Merchant of Venice (1973) TV Movie
Laurence Olivier stars in this adaption as well.

It's the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet whose families are in a feud and yet the Montague teenage son falls in love with the Capulet's teenage daughter. The two young lovers run away from home to be together but due to a misunderstanding their story has the most tragic ending.

In this version Romeo is portrayed by Leonard Whiting and Juliet is portrayed by Olivia Hussey. The movie is directed by Franco Zefirelli. It's labelled as a British-Italian romantic drama movie.

The 1930’s

This decade was characterized by the great depression and the start of World War II. The great depression lead to unemployment and poverty around the world. Some notable disasters are the China Floods of 1931, Yellow River Floods in 1938 and 1935 Labor Day hurricane. Art deco architecture was popular. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit in 1937. Some world leader of the decade includes: Franklin D Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Neville Chamberlain and the Japanese Emperor Hirohito.

The decade also saw some new technologies within aviation, radio and film. A lot of people listened to the radio for news and swing music became popular. It was also in this decade that the Technicolor movie came and there are about 50 classic movies made in this decade. But which movie from this decade is your favorite?
