My cable-TV box decided to self-destruct last Thursday. In years past, replacing it would have been as simple as dropping it off at the Comcast office and getting a replacement. But since all the Comcast offices have been closed since March, options were limited. I'm sure you've all heard how dreadful Comcast's customer service is. I would call the number, sit on hold for fifteen/twenty minutes being told repeatedly how "important" my call is to them, and then give up. My internet (from the same source) is fine, so I've been watching local news via the web and watching a lot of youtube and other sites. I was beginning to think that perhaps this whole cable TV thing might be an unnecessary expense that I might could cut out of my life. I had the TV on a lot just for the background noise, and the 24-hour news cycle was driving me up the wall. This past week hasn't been the horror story I would have imagined if someone had told me that I'd be 'unplugged' for a solid week. But for some reason someone at Comcast actually answered the phone this morning and offered to send me a new cable box via UPS within a day or two (and I send back the broken one). Could it be that they sensed I was about to break the habit ("cut the cord") and decided they had to reel me back in? I dunno, but just because I will have cable again in a few days doesn't mean I have to turn it on all the time.
