Louise Shafer was on the writing staff of SFT at the time, I think; she'd transitioned from acting on soaps (most notably on Ryan's Hope). When they needed a temp recast of the Stephanie role, it was likely most convenient for them to ask Shafer to step in, since she certainly knew her way around a soap set. A similar occurrence happened when Another World's Anna Stuart fell ill and Staff Writer Sofia Landon Geier (who'd appeared on Guiding Light previously) picked up right where Stuart had left off in a key courtroom scene, wearing Stuart's outfit.
I'm surprised that FYI channel hasn't spotlighted the infamous Days scene where Jack Deveraux is recast during a shower. One actor steps into a shower, who is followed by the actress playing his wife, Missy Reeves. Reeves then starts making out with the new actor as the steam rises. There was also a rather famous recast at the 1959 wedding of Vanessa Dale on Love of Life where Bonnie Bartlett walked down the aisle. When her groom lifted the veil Vanessa was now played by Audrey Peters.
