Everton striker Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink-driving, Cheshire Police have said.

Rooney was arrested shortly after 02:00 BST after officers stopped a black VW Beetle on Altrincham Road, Wilmslow.

Cheshire Police said Rooney, 31, had been charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit.

The ex-England captain has been released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court later this month.

Rooney, who retired from the national team last month, is England's all-time record goal scorer.

He rejoined his boyhood club Everton this summer, 13 years after leaving the Merseyside team for Manchester United.

Rather irresponsible for a father of 3!

Not exactly a surprise. But the disappointing is a mere fine and even a six-month ban is only a minor inconvenience to Rooney, they need to show that those on ridiculously inflated wages such as Rooney are not above the law in terms of the punishment/sentences handed out.

It wouldn't have happened in the days when he was managed by Sir Alex Ferguson who on one occasion gate-crashed a private party to drag players including Ryan Giggs out because they were drinking too much and partying too late into the night.

The little I know about Rooney suggests he's a nob. Paying sex workers for favours on numerous occasions - including while his wife was pregnant. Paying silly money for hair transplants and then posting photos on social media of himself getting the procedure done. This latest incident is right in character.

But he's a famous footballer so chances are he'll get off with a slap on the wrist.
