I think the earliest example of that type of character I can remember was Pete's wife Gladys on December Bride.

However, she was later revealed on the Pete and Gladys spin-off series.

Similarly, although we did not see Columbo's wife on his show, she got a spin-off series initially called Mrs. Columbo. It later got changed to Kate Columbo, then Kate The Detective and Kate Loves A Mystery (likely a nod to the actress playing her, Kate Mulgrew). The frequent renaming was their effort to retreat from her identity as the wife (later ex-wife) of Detective Columbo, since the Columbo producers had objected to NBC developing the show in the first place and no one from Columbo appeared in the spin-off.

I didn't think the show itself was that bad, if rather ordinary. If it had started with what turned out to be the final format, without the Columbo baggage, it might have been more successful

Heading into season 4 of Frasier and it pains me knowing Maris will soon be gone. I will miss Niles's comments of Maris's latest escapades. Like on the episode I just watched where Niles told Frasier of him and Maris having a fall-out and he said:

"I tried following her footsteps in the snow, but alas, she made none"
