Shows That Don't "Click" With You

Good morning my fellow television fans,

If you any of you are avid television fans as I am, which I assume that you are, I'm positive you have come across your share of shows that just do not "click" with you. This could be any type of show, whether comedy or drama, or anything in between, that you have either heard a lot about or possibly seen a lot of, but yet still do not like overall. There may not be anything wrong with these shows necessarily, but it could be something as simple as it not being your taste and therefore it just doesn't "do it" for you.

I have my share of these types of shows.

Being a frequenter of fan websites where sitcoms are discussed, I've heard my fair share of raves about SEINFELD being one of the best sitcoms ever. There's at least a dozen or more "Best Of" lists from a variety of publications that rank it slightly behind classic shows like I LOVE LUCY, THE HONEYMOONERS, and THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW as being the definitive sitcom.

I had never seen SEINFELD anywhere because the cable setup we had didn't have any channels that had the episodes in syndication. Finally there came a Labor Day weekend or something where TBS, the cable network, aired like a two-day marathon of SEINFELD. It was there gimmick of kicking off the show to air on their channel. I decided to record the episodes because they were starting with the show's best-remembered ones. I watched two or three episodes and then I deleted them. It wasn't funny at all to me. That style of humor just didn't set right with me, and I found the show to be bland and overrated. Since then, I've never had any desire whatsoever to revisit SEINFELD because I seriously doubt my perspective has changed.

Do you have any shows that just don't "click" for you? What are they? Why don't you like them?

For me you actually mentioned a couple of them. I know I’m probably the only person that feels this way but I was never a fan of I Love Lucy. I just never got it. To me most of the episodes I’ve seen are very similar. Lucy wants to be in the show, Ricky says no, Lucy plots her crashing of the show, gets caught, repeat. There are some episodes that stand out to me that I do like, but very few I’m sorry to say.
The Andy Griffith Show is another one. I like all the actors involved, like the characters, but I seldom laugh.
Seinfeld was a favorite of mine when it was on. I do know a lot of people however that just don’t get it and I understand their view. To me it was one of those shows that you either got a great episode or you got a terrible one. I feel there was nothing in between. And I have to admit that even though I was a big fan, when I watch it now it’s nowhere near as funny for me.

I'm always perplexed by FRIENDS -- if for no other reason than I don't like any of the characters and certainly wouldn't want to be friends with any of them.

I couldn't get into Peaky Blinders, despite forcing myself to watch two seasons of it. It has some brilliant actors that I love among the cast like Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, Sam Neill, to name a few, but the show just never grabbed me in the way I expected it to. The production values are great but I think it's the writing and direction that put me off it as it's a bit obvious and hammy sometimes (hamminess mostly originating with Arthur Shelby).

I knew someone was going to hit the classics.

But I've heard many a people say how I LOVE LUCY focused on the same plot episode after episode about Lucy trying to get into Ricky's act. Maybe it's because I'm a fan of the show, but that really isn't focused on as much as one might think. There are many, many episodes that revolve around other comedy situations rather than centering in on Lucy's drive for stardom.

As for THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, I can kind of understand some disfavor for it. While it is classic TV, it can be a subdued sometimes. Now, I still find it funny, and there are some episodes that are hilarious. I won't go out on a limb and say that it's overrated, but I just think it isn't always my personal taste. I've got to be in the mood for it. I've only got the first two seasons on DVD and I detest the color episodes.​

Well, I could almost say the same thing. FRIENDS has never really been a show that I personally care for, but I can watch it. And occasionally I will find myself laughing and enjoying the ride. I honestly don't know a lot about FRIENDS or its characters' personalities enough to say if I'd be friends with these people in reality. About all I know is Joey is the actor and projected ladies' man, Phoebe is dingy and sings a "Smelly Cat" song, and that Monica has always been prettier than Rachel.

That's about it.

Oh, and I like how every episode is titled "The One Where Everyone Drinks Coffee" or whatever. You know what I mean, they are all titled "The One..." something another.​

Friends is another one I have to agree with. Was never my cup of tea. And thinking of a couple of shows I grew up on, I’d have to add Family Ties and Growing Pains. Loved the Alex P. Keaton character but other than him the show to me was kind of boring. Growing Pains I just never enjoyed as it felt like it was just way too similar to Family Ties. I really never saw much of a difference between them.

I'm not familiar with most of the shows you mentioned, but I do remember enjoying LOST during its first couple of seasons. It got too far-fetched for my tastes, employing floating timelines and all kind of mess. It was good initially though.​

I got as far as them killing the polar bear and that was me. Find that too hard to watch and so unnecessary.

Growing Pains I just never enjoyed as it felt like it was just way too similar to Family Ties. I really never saw much of a difference between them.

The main reason why I dislike Growing Pains (and why that 1985-92 ABC comedy is ineligible for my DVD collection) is what Kirk Cameron did afterwards (being a loud, strident fundamentalist Christian, IIRC).

I watched the first episode of ONCE UPON A TIME, but have yet to go any further. And that was several years ago. I've never been compelled to return. I wanted to watch DAWSON'S CREEK when Pop started airing the show from the beginning, but I never did.

I thoroughly enjoy ONE TREE HILL as I am currently binge-watching it on Hulu.

EastEnders - utterly depressing

Saturday Night Live did a sketch a few years back when Daniel Craig hosted called A Sorry Lot Us which I thought was pretty much a spot-on parody of EastEnders but I wondered if the joke was lost on a lot of viewers who had probably never seen the show.

I listed comedies because it's a genre I typically watch (unlike Science Fiction or Westerns). I have a very low tolerance for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (though I did enjoy Mean Girls), either of them individually is difficult enough but when they're paired together I become sick to my stomach. I don't enjoy awards shows but watched The Golden Globes solely for Ricky Gervais when he was host. This year Fey and Poehler are hosting again, they are both so smug and condescending.

The Sopranos, I didn't find any of the characters to be sympathetic. I need a hero, it also helps if I think characters are flawed but capable of redemption.

Game of Thrones... I don't know why. I tried maybe 3 times. And I promised myself I will try an other time, even if I know that season 8 is a major disappointment for the fans. Well, I survived Lost's final season (that I try to deny till now, as a huge fan of the show) so I will survive GOT final season too, I guess.

In other hands, I love Vikings (which is quite a different show of course)

I also like cheap comedies like Two & a Half men, The Big Bang Theory, Mum, Just shoot Me... But for some reason I never liked New Girl, or Baby Daddy.

What I mean is that the "genre" is not an issue for me. I can enjoy sci-fi, comedy, drama, girls shows, soap, historic shows...
