They were the main characters! The show revolved around that one family and handful of their friends. Those few surviving characters were then joined by a whole bunch of new characters and the show carried on for a further 6 years.
Oh, here's another one, this time on As the World Turns:
Paul was convinced his lady-love Rose was cheating on him with Dusty (she wasn't). Paul suddenly started acting all sweet to her and rushed her into getting married, while Dusty tried to warn her that Paul was out to hurt her. Barbara, Paul's over-protective and nutso mother, had threatened Rose's life on several occasions. She also turned her young son Will (Paul's half-brother) against Rose, telling him Rose would "take Paul away". When the wedding day occurred, the minister asked if there were any objections. Paul then revealed his true colors as he launched into a humiliating tirade against Rose, accusing her of cheating on him with Dusty and basically calling her a ho in front of the entire town. She then collapsed at the altar, and was hauled to the hospital. Turns out Rose had been poisoned, and after asking Paul "How could you do this to me?", she died!
It looked like the groom had murdered the bride...
After some good detective work, we learned that young Will was the culprit. Barbara had warped the kid's mind with her ranting about Rose, so he put methanol in Rose's mouthwash "to make her get sick," only for her to get too big a dose and die from it.

The English soap Family Affairs had a wedding to remember when the bride, her parents, grandfather, sister, two brothers (one an infant) died after the canal boat they were holding the reception on blew up...

Wow, that was a bold move! Imagine in one cliffhanger they decided to kill the whole Ewing family! Certainly very risky. Probably great for the ratings. At least the show seems to have recovered from it and went on to flourish.
Another World had a very complex coupling in Jake and Paulina. Their (second) wedding was a spectacle because she discovered (surprise!) that he was after her family's money. And here I thought they had established that years before when she shot him. Oh, well....that's soaps for ya. Jake should have learned to duck.
Pete and Debbie's wedding reception on Emmerdale was interrupted when bickering husband and wife Robert and Chrissy accidentally caused a helicopter to fall on the reception---but not before the groom found out his new wife had been fooling around with his brother, Ross.

Very dramatic! The crash landing was really well done. Emmerdale has to be the unluckiest little village in all the UK. It's had a plane and a helicopter crash into it!

It seems out of the unseen cliffhanger files from "Melrose Place"...Remember that initially Kimberly was going to make Syd crash a plane over the building but instead they went for the bombs...
But the helicopter crash was caused by an explosion on the ground. I wonder what caused the fire that caused the explosion. Perhaps someone in the helicopter had accidentally dropped a lighter?

No both Chrissie and Robert came out unscathed in the disaster. Chrissie did face charges for setting the fire but managed to avoid going to jail and then Robert left her for Aaron, the man he had been having an affair with. Now Aaron and Robert are engaged and Chrissie is angry and bitter.
