It's hard to believe the Colbys of California premiered 40 years ago, on 20/11/1985.

Sable provides her daughter Monica with a freshening up, on seducing men (1985):

I'm a little disappointed that I didn't like this series. I discovered Dynasty when I was 11 and I've remained a fan all my life, maybe because it was a childhood memory. I only got to see Colbys five years ago, and I didn't get into it; I don't like any of the characters, but the spin of was a good idea.

Other than Sable, Constance and maybe Jason, the characters aren't all that engrossing.

I think Bliss was the secret star of this thing, maniacally working on nuclear fission in the basement we never saw.

The wealth was more effectively conveyed on THE COLBYS than its parent series -- probably because of Huson & Bast.

The Colbys Season 1 was better than Dynasty Season 6.
And Season 2 was much better than Season 7.

I liked the Colbys in the beginning. I think they could have done better with Constance. I know its a drama and you have to have friction but I liked Jason and Sable as a couple and hated that they ruined with Sable's sister.

I really like The Colbys but that first season was a bit of a mess, even if I do probably prefer it over the second season. The beginning was too cluttered to start with. The supposedly dying patriarch, the return of an absentee mother after twenty years and the resurrection of a supposedly dead pivotal Dynasty character (with a new head) was probably a bit too much to throw in all at once.

The central love triangles didn’t work either. I don’t think anyone was really rooting for Frankie and Jason to end up together, and because Jason had been such a dick to Sable, I think the general consensus was that Sable would be better off without him. Then there was the Fallon / Jeff / sociopath, control freak, rapist Miles “love” triangle that I would probably be fast forwarding through whenever I rewatch.

However, the Sable and Constance scenes are electric. If we’d gotten one scene per week of the two of them tearing strips off each other, it could’ve been enough to keep the show afloat. Unfortunately, Stanwyck’s diminishing screen time (reportedly due to issues with her remembering her lines) and subsequent departure put an end to that.

Season two is when the show steadied quality wise but unfortunately I felt that Sable ended up being sidelined. Ironically, the most interesting part of that season IMO was Connie’s mysterious “death” in Asia and the subsequent Hoyt Parker stuff.

I think The Colbys was actually better than Dynasty during 1985 to 1986. My favourite characters in order of preference: 1) - Jason, 2) - Sable and 3) - Constance.

I hated the Miles/Fallon/Jeff triangle and trying to make Miles a bad guy. I hate it in soaps when they do a complete 180 in a person's character. I liked Miles.

Oh, gosh. The bombastic theme was probably my favorite part of THE COLBYS. Although I'd use a different font. And instead of the oil well graphics cribbed from the parent series, I'd use an ocean wave.

I enjoyed The Colbys. Season one tried to do too much which meant it didn’t do much well, but a strong cast saved it.

Season two was a genuinely good 80s primetime soap season.

What doomed this show was Emma Samms being horribly miscast as Fallon. If they couldn’t get PSM to do it, they shouldn’t have done it.

This is why TV writers should never listen to the fans.
Imagine, a world without THE COLBYS because people disagreed with the casting.

Fallon (as played by Pamela Sue Martin) had already lost her agency in the home soap, starting in season 3, therefore the writing for TC Fallon can only be accused of consistency.
Furthermore, Jeff and Fallon were removed from their home base and Blake Carrington's protection. Jeff was not wanted in his new soap and Fallon married Miles because she didn't know that she was Fallon. If she knew, she'd probably be attracted to Zach Powers.
They were written as star-crossed lovers who had to survive in a strange soap land. What's a poor, young, innocent billionaire to do?

"The Colbys" needed Jeff but not Fallon. They should have done it without Emma Samms but they could have done it without Pamela Sue Martin as well.
