Episodes 96-103 So went the spoiler-filled preview for the episode featuring Cornelia Frances’s debut as the oft-mentioned-but-previously-unseen Morag. Fortunately, these unnecessary previews weren’t part of my viewing experience thirty years ago (and I choose to skip them now other than, as in this case, the occasional curious peek). So I was able to discover Morag for myself rather than watch with a one-dimensional soundbite resonating. Characters’ truths are a different story, though. And Alf presented a less hyperbolic summary of Morag an episode before she arrived: Indeed, months before appearing onscreen it was Morag who outed Ailsa as a murderer. In a nice touch, Alf and Ailsa had a brief conversation about it ahead of Morag’s visit, and Ailsa said she was willing to move past it if Morag was. Once she did arrive, Morag made it passive-aggressively plain that she had no intention of giving Ailsa an easy ride, fixing her with her most stony glare as introductions were made: Not that Ailsa is alone. Morag’s snobbery, control and bullying have been the hallmarks of almost every scene of hers so far. Very few people in Summer Bay have escaped her cutting observations: On Frank: On Lance and Martin: On her relatives: Celia gets it left, right and centre from her. A fact of which she’s painfully aware: There was also an enjoyably awkward “meet the in-laws” session at Summer Bay House, where Alf introduced his sister to the Fletchers. Adding to the fun, Ray Meagher corpsed slightly while saying “Morag Bellingham”. I’m not clear what the joke was, apart from Justine Clark not making her mark and jumping to the correct place so she wasn’t between Ray and Cornelia. But really, it just looked like the cast were having fun and there was a good energy. While it wasn’t quite Patricia Hamilton and her bread roll tearing etiquette, there were a couple of moments in which Morag made the point that she is in every way socially superior to her hosts: Whether or not Morag is truly “wicked”, and whether or not she “brings doom” remain to be seen. However, it’s evident from her initial episodes that she is not someone who takes prisoners. And she’s certainly mesmerising to watch.
