Episodes 286-293 (...continued) Dodge has arrived in Summer Bay. And there’s no mistaking he’s Bad News because he arrived accompanied by a wailing guitar soundtrack. He has a great reveal. Sally waits opposite the empty bus stop. When the bus arrives she stands in the road and speaks to the driver to ask if he’s seen her missing friend, Lance. She then returns to her original spot. The bus pulls away to reveal Dodge standing there. He saunters menacingly across the road towards her and nods at her bag of sweets: When she clutches the sweets to her, he snorts: He empties the packet into his hand then returns the bag to Sally and saunters off to a phone box where he searches for change and thumps it. It may be be immediately apparent what kind of person Dodge is, but there’s whole lot of mystery. In his first scene, it’s not even clear that he’s Australian. His first lines sound very Grant Mitchell (as in Sharongate, rather than the future H&A character of the same name). Dodge then enters the store where he orders breakfast, then tries to sneak away while Celia is chatting to Donald: Something about Celia simply asking Dodge to pay whatever he has on him with the rest going on a mental slate just screams “small town”. It speaks volumes about this community. A community which Dodge is going to shake up and downright abuse. Dodge’s motif of Trouble With A Capital T informs all his interactions. Lance is particularly vulnerable, having disappeared to the city for a few days with nobody but Sally noticing or caring. On his return, Lance has news which he drops into conversation, but Martin is too concerned about the Dirty Dancing contest being alcohol-free: Not for the first time recently, the first mention of “still current in 2020” character Marilyn comes as part of overlapping dialogue in episode 288 that can easily be missed. While Lance is speaking about one thing, Martin is speaking about another. And the ear struggles to make sense of either without them getting mixed up. Which means needing to listen really carefully or miss it. Kind of like Madonna’s spoken dialogue in the Middle 8 of Rain. Lance first meets Dodge trying to steal his car. It quickly becomes apparent to Dodge that Lance has money, and so he puts on a charm offensive/sob story combo while filling in his backstory: continued...
