Episodes 296-312 (...continued) Teenage Carly’s impending marriage to the teacher who decided he wanted her from the moment she walked into his classroom is just one of the problems getting Pippa down at the moment. There’s also Frank and Bobby’s homelessness, Steven’s bereavement and the decision about taking on another foster child. These are things that Pippa would have taken in stride a while back, but also in the current mix is Tom’s stressful new job now that Stacey has stepped down from her role, meaning she is bearing the brunt of it while feeling unsupported. During one of Tom’s stops at home, they discussed Miss Molloy’s phone call to say she had a potential foster kid for them, which harks back to the discussions they had at the end of Season One: With Tom unreachable, Pippa starts making decisions and the result is an even bigger fallout between the couple. In a nice visual extension of her anger, Pippa spends half the scene furiously salting and then taking a tenderiser to the meat: Lacking support from Tom, Pippa gets her support from elsewhere. First Ailsa, who has something to say about it to Tom: In another of those scenes that very quietly but very definitely highlights the growth in relationships on the series, Pippa finds herself offloading to someone whose antagonism had previously strengthened the Fletchers’ relationship: Donald Fisher. She rants about her ungrateful family; her foster kids’ problems; even her husband: I’m very much enjoying angry, wits end, edgy Pippa. Norman Coburn, as always, does a nice job of being supportive and uncomfortable at the same time. As he tries to make a graceful exit, Pippa apologises for him walking in to that, and he politely comments that she might have chosen the wrong person. Pippa then comments that he’s practically family. It echoes the conversation between she and Tom at the Dirty Dancing competition, but this time lacking bitchy irony (which had come almost exclusively from Tom in the previous conversation). With the decision about a foster child taken, and no turning back, the family gather outside when Miss Molloy’s colleague, Howard West arrives in the car. Celia has used the flimsy excuse of returning a cake tin to have a snoop at the new arrival. What can possibly go wrong with this scenario? continued...
