Episodes 296-312 (...continued) Before Simon disappeared, there was a beautiful scene in which he brought Roo home to Celia’s, where she is currently staying. It’s late in the evening, and Roo walks in to find Celia waiting for her. Instead of the expected lecture about morals, Celia insists that Roo ask Simon in for a coffee. She tells them she’s going to bed so won’t be in their way, and suggests they could put some music on, because she’ll be asleep by the time her head hits the pillow. “It’ll be nice” she says, evoking the whimsical fantasist that we saw when she was talking about looking after Martha with Roo. Before she makes her exit, Celia turns to Roo: It’s building on another surprisingly liberal conversation they had when Roo initially moved in: Spending time with Nigel, in the hope it could turn into a romance has softened Celia in the best way possible. Nigel’s investment in the situation is pleasingly ambiguous. It’s clear he is enjoying her friendship but at the same time he is making plans to leave now that his work with Morag is coming to a natural end. Not reading those signals, Celia is busy planning for the best. Initially she is worrying about what the town thinks: Taking Alf and Nigel’s advice, Celia does go for it and allows herself to stop being concerned with what others think long enough to enjoy herself. Donald is one of those who expresses concern at her lack of discretion in being seen around with Nigel. And we get an in-depth mention of a character last seen almost a year and a half ago now: Celia is soon given reason to fret, however, when an insurance investigator comes to her having asked questions round town: Adding insult to injury, the person who caused the fire in the first place pays her a visit at Alf’s bait shop where she’s made herself at home - and driven Alf mad - by creating towering displays of baked beans: Celia turning the outside of Alf’s store into a cafe area with tables and parasols is giving us the opportunity to see more of the exterior. In fact we’ve had a number of location treats in seeing different angles of locations old and new. In addition to the front and side of the bait shop, we’ve also seen the exterior of the police station, a new-look exterior to Celia’s home - complete with her bike propped up against it, and the front aspect from Donald’s house, which is very green and pleasant indeed, with not another house to be seen.
