Episodes 296-312 (...continued) After a bit of a build up, Lance’s new girlfriend has finally show up with him at the diner, stunning the regulars. Marilyn is one of those names that is probably familiar to viewers of the series from a number of different eras. After a number of exits and re-entrances, she still appears in the series in 2020, over three decades on from this debut. Back in 1990 when Marilyn first appeared on UK screens, it seemed clear to me she was the new Leanne. Who herself was the new Narelle. And while I’ve got a soft spot for Narelle, I’m very certain that Marilyn is far preferable to annoying, pallid, squeaky Leanne. I was curious what I’d think of early Marilyn this time round. My memory was that she took a while to hit her stride, but she’s fine here. A lot of the trademarks are here, right down to the funny walk. Everything about her initial appearances is to introduce her as the loveable bubbly ditz. She opens her mouth and babbles about anything. And out come the Malapropisms and downright made up words: She’s only appeared in two episodes, so the jury’s out. She could become wearing and tedious, but she has a certain charisma that feels hopeful that she could liven up the obligatory Lance and Martin scenes. Dodge and Pippa look over the family photos, which gives us an update of another departed character: And when Tom returns, that’s just what happens. For the first time since the Pilot, there is a new “official” Fletcher family lineup.
