Episode 313-323 Nigel’s departure from the series has been quite an impactful one, with two Stewart sisters being most profoundly affected. With Celia waiting for Nigel to pop the question, he wishes for a way to soften the blow of him leaving Summer Bay alone. It’s Ailsa who concocts a story about Nigel’s mythical old fiancée, Jill. Nigel arrives at Celia’s to find she’s pulled out all the stops for the evening and popped the champagne cork: It’s one of those beautiful Fiona Spence moments where she breaks your heart with Celia’s quiet devastation. She takes the audience on that journey from excited ebullience to confusion to anger and deep sadness. Watching her try to recover her dignity and attempting to behave with insouciance is almost painful. Nigel's blindness allows this to play out on a different level. Celia says one thing but shows us quite something else at exactly the same time. Fiona Spence does a wonderful job with it. Nigel can't leave without one last challenging confrontation with Morag, who scoffs at the story about Jill: By first thing next morning, both Celia and Morag are on similar paths. Both have been in some way humbled by their conversations with Nigel (and how tragic that the Nigel/Morag talk was full of truths, while the Nigel/Celia conversation had much dishonesty on both their parts). Nigel comes downstairs to find no sign of Morag. After calling for her fruitlessly, he picks up his case and exits. Morag then comes down the stairs and to the window, where she stands and cuts a solitary figure as she silently watches Nigel disappear. Nigel is very much on Celia’s mind, too. After sleeping on it she has decided to see Nigel off and says a quiet little prayer in the car before she approaches him. I love that the running gag of Celia’s bad driving continues even here. As she pulls up at the bus stop she collides with a bin or drum of some kind, which topples over and lies in the background of the scene like a symbol of how Celia herself is feeling inside, despite the fine weather and her seemingly sunny exterior. She offers to drive Nigel to the city and says she’d like to meet his fiancée.
