Episode 313-323 (...continued) As was perhaps evident when Bobby returned the manuscript, she and Frank are in trouble. They’re not getting along and are arguing left, right and centre. It’s a pattern that’s been building for a while - continuing from the arguments they had about never seeing each other due to work. It’s perhaps a case of being careful what you wish for. Losing the flat has placed them into living situations where it would be very difficult to avoid each other. Compounding it, Frank is still close to Roo and Bobby is insecure around this. Perhaps justifiably. The conversation over the printout of the memoirs summed up where they were. Nigel’s last conversation with Roo and Bobby was to persuade them to return them. His argument was that holding onto them made them no better than Morag. Roo could see his point. Bobby couldn’t. Convinced, Frank would vote with his wife, she agreed to take it to him: After Bobby leaves, Roo seems genuinely concerned: It’s perhaps the moment where any chance Bobby and Frank’s marriage had was killed. Either way, it’s certainly a dickish thing for Frank to do. And it’s the first in a series. At the Macklin event, Roo brings Frank a drink. He looks at her and tells her she looks beautiful. Roo points out the phone is ringing and Frank goes to answer it. Following Frank’s earlier comment in the office, Roo had looked quite shaken to receive it. This time, she smiles to herself once Frank is out of sight. She may be fighting it, but she’s enjoying it. When a “British” (read: New Zealand actor doing stock Home Counties accent) bigwig at Macklin comes to dinner, Frank is relying on Bobby to be the trophy wife. He is disappointed: I really like the Bedfords. Peter is larger than life, while his wife Claire is like a polite Stepford Wife, complimenting Pippa on each course, asking her about sauces and clearly enjoying her food. She accepts second helpings and at one point is too absorbed in eating to follow what is being said. They’re great fun. None of which stops the inevitable fallout and blazing row between Bobby and Frank when they get home. Bobby spends the night in Donald’s spare room. Frank, meanwhile, uses the evening’s events to continue laying the groundwork with Roo: There was a nice little nod to the past after Donald consoled Bobby. She could be seen hugging Benjamin, the bear she was left in Alan’s will: Another quiet nod to continuity came when Steven and Stacey had one of their heart-to-hearts: Without being shackled to John Morris, Sandie Lillingston’s Stacey is emerging as a very watchable, likeable character. I do hope this is built on. Her friendship with Steven, too, is compelling. Which is more than I can say for Steven and Dodge. Dodge has taken Steven to the city where they went to sex shows and Steven apparently lost his virginity (with shades of Dynasty’s “The Bordello” episode). Then they drove back home in a car Dodge had stolen. All of which sounds far more exciting than it actually was.
