A Very Brady Renovation

Last year the Los Angeles house used in establishing shots as the family home on "The Brady Bunch" went up for sale. HGTV purchased the house with plans to use it for a series. When I learned this I imagined them giving the house's split-level mid-century modern style a 21st century update. The house certainly needed a refresh, the last owner redecorated (in the 80s, I imagine) in French Provincial with lots of pink toile and swan faucets that Ludwig II would have loved.

HGTV has posted preview clips of the series (which has yet to air) which features all six Brady kids along with many HGTV series hosts"renovating" the house. By "renovating" I mean demolishing all of the existing house except for the facade and sourcing original furnishings from "The Brady Bunch" or locating similar pieces. They intend to duplicate the set from the series - how is this creative? How does this inspire homeowners planning projects for their own homes? The clips indicate the show is more about nostalgia and personality then about home renovations.

Not really a surprise. I'm not into reno shows - or reality in general - but I would watch it for the Brady reunion.

I've been following the progress of the renovation since it began, and I even posted about it on the Dallas forum (I thought it would be cool if the same thing was done to Southfork.) I personally find it creative because they're making the interior of the home used for exterior shots match the interior sets. How often is that done? Nostalgia is huge these days. I'm sure the majority of HGTV's shows are about modernizing homes, but this show is specifically geared towards recreating a piece of Americana. I actually wish more effort was put in restoring the original appearance of older homes. Usually all of the character and charm is stripped from older homes and replaced with a more opulent look. I find it a bit pretentious.

I heard HGTV is giving the house away once its completed. I'm sure it would be a fan's dream to live in the Brady house, especially if the interior matched the studio set. I'm not a huge Brady Bunch fan, but I certainly understand the mindset of the show's biggest fans. If I won Southfork after the interior was made to resemble the set, it would look like 1980 forever.
