In the last few days I played Other for the first time. In the best possible way, I like it but it didn't feel instantly accessible. Instead like the album that rewards investment, which is always going to be my preference. Immediate standouts for me were the Lover, Go; Alive and the title track. I also really liked The English U. Beautiful Gun and Happy Giddy are nice tracks, but spoke to me the least (yesterday, anyway. They're the two most uptempo tracks, so I could put that down to my mood. I've played snippets of both this morning and found myself wondering what I didn't enjoy). April 10 is an interesting concept, nicely done, but there's a reason I won't be playing it (long story short, a specific thing about her speaking voice in the narration reminds me of someone who wasn't particularly kind to me, which is strange because I don't hear it when she speaks in Moyet Moments or interviews. Now I'm a little peeved at someone I haven't seen in decades for spoiling what should have been a very enjoyable track). Perhaps most interesting for me have been the tracks which left me unsure how I felt about them. I'd read a little about the intent behind The Rarest Birds, which perhaps set expectations too high, so it underwhelmed slightly. There are some lines in it I adored, and some that I couldn't connect with. I'm curious how I'll feel about this one in the longer term. Reassuring Pinches is the track I played immediately upon finishing the album: not because I liked it so much, but because it left me feeling I hadn't got it. The second play left me feeling much the same way (even though I liked it well enough). You can be sure I'll be going for play #3 very soon. At the opposite end of Alison's career, I've been delving into Yazoo a little more, expanding my collection to include all tracks from both studio albums, plus some remixes and live performances. How did I not know about the 1999 version of Only You? I've been playing this a lot the last couple of days (after editing it slightly as the version I have sounds like it misses the first few notes). The fuller sound and the added strings really add something. It's probably heresy to say I prefer this to the original, but it's certainly been exciting to hear it brought to life in a new way. Then, when I looked for information on this, I saw there was a gorgeous orchestral remix from 2017 (used in a Christmas advert). I had assumed the original was a b-side I'd missed from her solo career, so it was a nice surprise to find another Yazoo track that I'm thoroughly enjoying.
