In some ways she was even worse. That kind of thing wouldn't have looked very tasteful for a woman of her age (although the Patrick Mann novelisation describes her as having "beautiful legs") therefore it wasn't a matter of being more virtuous. This was not limited to the casting of Jane Wyman. As I mentioned in my previous, these half-protagonist/half-antagonist characters were supposed to be likeable no matter how bad things got. No one on this forum will say "I hated Abby/JR/Alexis so much I wish they hadn't been in the series at all". What "likeable" means in this context is entertaining and fascinating, not because we are actually rooting for them. We still hate them for what they do to the real good guys, but without their shenanigans there wouldn't be any story. Jane Wyman's past of playing nice characters has absolutely no impact (or shouldn't have any impact) on the villainous role she played in Falcon Crest. She signed the contract, she knew what was expected of her. Casting against type, especial comedic actors, often make for the best villains, and Jane Wyman was an excellent choice. If anything, it shows the actor's versatility. Incidentally, the part was originally written with Barbara Stanwyck in mind, and she had had much more experience playing evil characters. Therefore I don't think we were supposed to have a softened interpretation of Angela Channing's villainy (or at least the capability to do villainous things no mattter who would get hurt in the process). And therefore I still think she's popular on this forum for reasons that don't always make sense to me.
