For the last ten days, each time I click on the (British-based) BBC's News site there is a new update about this woman: from last week's speculation about whether or not the execution would go ahead (and articles telling us what a tragic life she's had) through to her waking up "angry and confused". Currently, she has a devoted "live" article on their home page with updates coming every twenty minutes. The botched execution is horrific and newsworthy, no doubt, but the media are treating the story like that of a hospitalised celebrity. Her name and image appear in article after article, invariably framing her as a victim and "survivor", while Colleen Slemmer barely rates a mention. It's so very wrong.
