Regarding Christmas Day ratings I can see ITV 1 winning daytime and then BBC One winning most slots from 3.pm up to 9:30pm. Clever scheduling by BBC One means Call the Midwife will overlap Doc Martin by 30 minutes which will dent Doc Martin in the overnights. However both Call the Midwife and Doc Martin should rate relatively well, I can see Call the Midwife hitting 5+ million and Doc Martin just under 4 million.

EastEnders I think will be the lowest rated soap out of the 3, as there is less interest and no buzz around the show with around 2.5 million. Emmerdale airing at the earlier time of 6pm and against Strictly, I can see getting around 3 million and Corrie topping the soaps with around 3.5 only against The Wheel and Ghosts.

I hope Doc Martin rates well as ITV have made an effort this year. I could be completely wrong we will find out Boxing Day, but apart from the Kings Speech I can see Christmas Day across the board being very low.

My concessions to Christmas TV viewing were The King's Christmas Broadcast and Ghosts.

In previous years it wasn't unheard of for me to leave the TV on after The Queen's Speech and watch a good film, but I switched off Aladdin at the second auto-tuned musical number. Who at the Beeb thought to was a good idea in 2022 to follow up the King's message of peace and hope with Will Smith of all people?

For me, Call The Midwife was the best thing on TV on Christmas Day. A great episode with a really good balance of humour, pathos, sentimentality and drama. Ideal viewing for Christmas.

Regarding the King's speech, I liked that there was focus on his Christian faith and faith in general.

The 10.7 million who saw King Charles's message compares with 8.96 million who watched the Queen a year ago.

It’s not my cup of tea either but there’s obviously an audience there for it.

Christmas TV in the UK has been increasingly disappointing in recent years. Maybe I’m looking back with rose tinted glasses but nowadays, it feels like the schedules are mostly festive editions of existing panel or game shows. There’s nothing new or different about the schedules at Christmas now.
