I've never been much of a reality TV fan, but my mother and I used to watch DANCE MOMS every Wednesday night. The show aired on Lifetime from 2011 to 2019. There were nine seasons, 224 episodes, ten specials, and four spin-offs. DANCE MOMS follows centers on Abby Lee Miller, the owner and lead dance instructor at the Abby Lee Dance Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Talk about drama, is all I'm going to say. The dancing aspect was just a byproduct, and basically just a reason for the women to have a reason to be around one another. The primary draw of the show, as one would expect, is the drama, catty, sometimes petty behavior between the adult dance teachers and the dancers' mothers. The crew of mothers I remember -- Melissa, Holly, Kelly, Christi, and Jill -- always have something going with Abby. They argue over dance routines, costumes, lessons, school schedules, and work schedules. And then there's "The Pyramid". The infamous, show-defining pyramid where Abby ranks the dance from worst-to-best. It's the most parodied part of the show, and it all serves as a main component of the TV produced drama, wherein Abby critiques and often belittles the dancers' technique and most recent performance, giving the moms and sometimes the dancers themselves ammunition to get into verbal sparring matches with Abby over her rankings. In the grand history of reality shows, DANCE MOMS wasn't without its own share of controversy. Abby herself and even some of the moms had their own time in the tabloids for various reasons, while some the dancers have gone on to professional careers as actresses, singers, and of course, dancers. Any fans of DANCE MOMS out there?
