On Sunday night, in front of a watching audience of tens of millions of Englishmen and a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions, England will step out into Wembley alongside Italy and the countries will sing their national anthems. Or Italy will sing their national anthem, meanwhile England will sing the British national anthem, as they have done for generations. But is it time that the players actually stepped out onto the pitch and sang something more English.

I've deliberately went for classy national anthem sounding songs rather than footy songs like Three Lions and Vindaloo as much as I love the idea of the players belting out Vindaloo before matches if only for the reaction of foreigners. This honestly feels like the kind of thing we should have a referendum on.

God Save The Queen is the UK national anthem and represents all 4 nations of the UK so it shouldn't be played before England matches. It's also one of the most boring dirges imaginable. Compare it with the Italian national anthem which is a great tune and so much more inspiring. Their anthem is about God, the people of their country and unity whereas ours is about The Queen. Unless she is going to put on her studs and line up alongside Marcus Rashford, why on earth we singing about her? How is that meant to inspire people?

Jerusalem (my preference) or Land of Hope and Glory would be a much better option.

Apparently it's already being dropped at rugby matches, so hopefully this brings us closer to getting it dropped at football matches.

I would vote for Jerusalem, its one of my fav hymns and I want it at my funeral
It was played at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in 2014 when England won a medal

I also love the Welsh National anthem,

I also have loved the French Anthem since I first heard it sung in Casablanca, stirring and passionate

I hate the Scottish Anthem.
