I've been thinking about this quite a bit. It reminds me of this quote from Ted Shackelford ... "The thing with being on a series that runs that long is that the writers run out of things to do. What happens if you’re the guy who’s been on the show ten years and is highly paid but they have nothing for you to do, is that they bring in other people, and you become a supporting character to those people." ... which sounds kind of a negative thing, but thinking about it now, it's the outsiders -- Matthew and Claudia, Mickey Trotter, the Ramoses, Joshua, Ciji, Peter Hollister and Jill Bennett -- who are driven mad and/or corrupted and/or destroyed through their dealings with the main cast that often produce the most potent and poignant Soap Land moments. And they mostly tend to start off as more ordinary and relatable to the viewer than the regulars (i.e., not rich) -- the "us" to the more glamorous characters' "them". So maybe their fates are what would also happen to us if we were to dare enter the walls of Soap Land. And maybe that's why some viewers are resistant to them, cos they'd rather imagine themselves as Joan Collins or Krystle than Lindsay Blaisdel or Tommy Ortega.
