I’ve completed my unfortunately short (based on episodes available) jaunt through late 2002 Guiding Light, and I’ve a few observations. While the original and the best Alexandra Spaulding will always be Beverlee McKinsey, I thought that Joan Collins did a good job in the role. All of her other post-Dynasty soap roles were basically poor Alexis clones, whereas she seemed more at ease as Alexandra, exuding a mix of ruthlessness towards her enemies and warmth towards those that she cared about. She wasn’t just another Alexis caricature. It’s a shame that her stint on GL didn’t last longer. Most of the cast had a really good chemistry and as a result, their dialogue felt natural and even at times ad libbed, because of how normally their conversations flowed. I could watch Reva and her various dramas all day long. When I started this, she was going on trial for the mercy killing of her ex-husband/brother in law, and in the last few episodes, she was hiding a mobster who’d just faked his death, in her pool house. Kim Zimmer is so watchable. Similarly, I loved the watching the Spauldings and all of the OTT drama that took place under their roof. Basically, while it’s not perfect (I didn’t really care for the Santos crime drama) it’s definitely a soap that I would’ve watched had I had access to it back in the day.
