I saw the closing credits from one of the first three episodes of the miniseries in April 1978. The first scene I remember catching was Bobby coming up the steps of Jenna's apartment in Morgan Fairchild's episode that fall. I didn't intend to ever watch DALLAS. Seeing Major Nelson in a big cowboy hat, cackling into the rearview mirror at night, all set to a jaunty John Parker score, was enough to turn me off of this crass and vulgar "soap opera" for nighttime TV forever. Or so I thought. I'd seen most of the cast elsewhere: Larry from JEANNIE, Linda's transsexual shoulders from ALL THAT GLITTERS, Jim Davis from countless westerns, Patrick from MAN FROM ATLANTIS, Susan Howard from PETROCELLI, and even Charlene (who was murdered on POLICE WOMAN, as was Audrey Landers). But, oddly, I didn't know Barbara -- I'd yet to see VERTIGO -- and she became the first one to draw me in. She reminded me rather markedly of my maternal grandmother, her gentle matriarchal ways, even her eventual kitchen and the way she loved blue. But it wasn't until 'Who Shot JR?' that I really started watching DALLAS, as it was a global phenomenon in 1980, but I didn't really, really become a weekly viewer until after Jim Davis died and I started watching every episode to see how they handled Jock's absence, somewhat appalled that they kept him alive for many months after the actor had expired (although Paulsen would explain years later why they had to do that). I was now hooked, and I caught up with the backstory when DALLAS became the first series to go into syndicated reruns while still #1 in primetime in 1984. By then I was watching all four of the shows and had been for several years. I even made a miniature Southfork in my spare time.
