The transition period ended 2 weeks ago so the UK is now completely out of the EU. Can anyone tell me what we have gained? How have things gotten better since we got Brexit done?
As far as I can see the downsides that were dismissed as "project fear" have either come true or can still come true and the upsides are non-existent. There is no £350 million a week for the NHS. There are no new international trade deals just EU trade deals rolled over so they can still apply to us, even though they are not specific to the UK economy.
On the negatives, where should I begin?
1. Businesses trading with the EU now have to complete a of paperwork. The Food and Drink Federation’s Ian Wright told MPs on the Brexit committee today that a job that typically took three hours before Brexit is now taking five days and this will push up costs.
2. Scotland Food and Drink which represents businesses in the industry this week reported the impact of changes to fishing policies means that seafood exporters were losing £1million in sales every day.
3. There is now a crisis in food distribution between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This week the big UK supermarkets warned of long-term shortages in Northern Ireland supermarkets. Andrew Opie of the British Retail Consortium told the Brexit committee today they would get even worse when Brexit grace periods end, on 31 March 2012.
4. We are now less safe because of the ending of full police and security cooperation between the UK and the EU. Prof Gemma Davies of Northumbria University told the Northern Ireland affairs committee that Brexit amounted to an overall “security downgrade” compared with the years of EU membership, and highlighted the loss of access to real-time data as a major problem.
The whole Brexit debacle was based on lies by right-wingers in the Tories, UKIP and Brexit Parties and now we are all suffering and it is set to get worse.
