The first audio commentary was really enjoyable, with John Nettles and Robin Banks Stewart both having impeccable memories for the locations, background, actors and crew. They built a really nice picture, and it's evident there's genuine affection between the people who worked on the series, with some remaining in touch some twenty five years after the series ended, which was the time of recording the commentary. What an eye-opener to realise that the commentaries themselves are now historic, since the DVDs were released over twenty years ago now. I hadn't realised so many of the interiors were filmed at Pinewood, with unlucky Annette Badland being on the series for some time without getting to Jersey (RBS says they wrote in Charlotte's fall from the bicycle specifically to remedy this). Interesting that Diamante Lil was written for Diana Dors, who was unable to do the role due to her battle with cancer. Both John and RBS had worked with her before and had nothing but good words. Likewise, Cecile Paoli replaced another actress at the eleventh hour. It was said that Cecile had gone on to success with the RSC, and was married to a famous French photographer and had a family (I laughed when John fondly spoke of her English accent, and how he remembered her asking for a "prone salad"). Lindsay Heath who played Kim was said to have just turned 36 at the time of recording, and John N. assured listeners the affection seen on-screen was very real. Deborah Grant also received praise, John saying she was one of the best actresses on television and woefully underused. I'm already feeling good about the remaining two. Sadly I don't think there are any other special features.
