Dragging this thread up from the depths of 2020, as I’ve recently been watching a bit more of The City. When I previously posted, only the first two weeks were available to watch. There wasn’t a whole lot else online, presumably given that the show was not popular, never repeated and wasn’t broadcast widely abroad. Since then, a random smattering of episodes from late 1995 and 1996 have appeared, along with the show’s final three weeks in March 1997. Based on the extra episodes that I’ve watched, my thoughts have not changed on the show’s opening months. Episodes from November / Christmas / New Year’s Eve 1995 are still very plot free, despite the show’s being six weeks on air by that point. Characters just kind of wander around chatting to each other, with no noticeable source of major drama. I saw a comment on one of the videos that quotes a Soap Opera Digest writer, which sums thing up perfectly, “they had all of the ingredients but didn’t bother to bake the cake”. Which is exactly what happened initially. They had a great cast, good dialogue and impressive sets. There was just no notable drama to hook you in. Cut to late 1996, and the arrival of Jane Elliot as GH’s Tracy Quatermaine. Things start to tighten up and by the end (March 1997), it’s a much pacier show with a lot more dramatic action going on. Granted, some of the action (Tracy becomes a New York mafia queen after her mobster husband dies) is a bit ludicrous but I think the show could’ve continued. I also wish they’d kept Morgan Fairchild’s media mogul Sydney Chase on the show to butt heads with Tracy, but she fell foul of budget cuts.
