Those three shows had interesting (to me) trajectories. Suddenly Susan’s ratings halved after they moved it out of the Thursday night lineup for its second season. However, it was still rating well enough on Monday nights (usually coming 3rd in its timeslot) for NBC to keep renewing it, despite the reviews being consistently bad. It was the show’s fourth season where it all went creatively pear shaped. David Strickland had passed away, Judd Nelson left and a new writing team were brought in, alongside new cast members including Eric Idle, Sherri Shepherd and Rob Estes. Ratings fell low enough for NBC to pull the series before all episodes had aired, with the finale finally being aired at some stage in the middle of the night. Veronica’s Closet is a perfect example of a “timeslot hit”. It was one of the Top 5 most watched of all network shows for its first two seasons, when it was tucked in between Frasier and ER on the Thursday night schedule. When NBC moved it to Monday nights for its third season, ratings halved. The Naked Truth originally ran on ABC for its first season. It did relatively well, finishing as the 25th most watched show that season but it obviously wasn’t enough for ABC, who cancelled it. NBC picked the show up, where it was added to the Thursday night lineup and became the fourth most watched show of the 1996-97 season (tied with Friends). For its third season, they moved it to Monday nights and did an onscreen cast overhaul, which saw ratings plummet. The show finished 75th, with its last six episodes never being aired.
