Especially after Sidwell tried very hard to kill Luke's son in that Africa story. It is noteworthy (to me, at least) that the recent/current writing is really softening Sonny up. He's mainly doing "grandpa cooking for the family" scenes rather than his "cursing and throwing barware/screaming about betrayal/waving around the huge chrome gun" scenes like we have seen historically. They say he's selling the piers to Sidwell, but he isn't acting like this is going to ruin his business (or even that it's a threat), which is....really odd. People died over much less in the past. It used to be "the business above all else," but he seems willing to let Sidwell win a few battles as he actively avoids his historical 'solution' to such problems (which is to have Jason kill Sidwell). If anything, he's acting like a sounding board for Laura, giving her advice on how to slay her own dragon rather than rushing in, guns blazing to save to poor little woman. The subtle "break-up" of the Carly/Sonny/Jason triumvirate over the past few months (where each character has their own story and the three rarely cross paths, let alone share a story) is a welcome relief, but whereas Jason got a romance and Carly got a revenge caper, Sonny is acting like a supporting player in Laura's crusade against Sidwell!
