Interesting, because this trial has actually improved for me on repeated viewings: On first viewing, Ray's trial felt like a bit of an anti-climax. I was expecting, or at least hoping for, something a bit more sensational involving the whole family, a bit like the Ted Dinard murder trial on Dynasty, where everyone who played a role in what happened to Mickey, most especially Sue Ellen and maybe even JR, would be called to the witness stand to account for their actions. Instead, we mostly got a lot of day-players in suits (plus Bobby, Lucy and Aunt Lil) giving very sober professional testimony. In retrospect, this makes a lot more sense as the focus was rightly on what specifically took place in Mickey's hospital room, and watched on its own terms, works just as well as a big bells-and-whistles hearing might have. Also, it's understandable that the writers would be less interested in repeatedly rehashing the events of the previous season and more interested in moving the story and the characters forward, which is kind of what that whole season was about. And besides, Sue Ellen would eventually take the witness stand at the Lisa Alden/Christopher custody trial (as well as testifying for Ann Ewing in New Dallas) so it all worked out in the end.
