The language, intonation and even some pronunciations are all somewhere West of the mid-Atlantic (one British &quot;actor&quot; even did the &quot;say as you see&quot; pronunciation for the second syllable of &quot;amenities&quot;).&nbsp; This bizarre vision extends to the sets (has any British police station ever had one of those &quot;open cage in the corner&quot;&nbsp; holding pens for prisoners, seen so often in American films and series?).Most of the cast is entirely charmless, and any reasonable performers are wasted (even Emma Thompson appears to glaze over with boredom once or twice).The film has less edge than it should, ultimately leaning towards the saccharine, one-note &quot;everyone learns a valuable lesson&quot;.&nbsp; There is one violent death which has a touch of the Watership Down to it, though, so that&#039;s something.
