I’ve always felt that (not sure if the writers ever examined it to this degree) JR’s physical cowardice explained some of his bad traits — he couldn’t be a “man’s man shitkicker” like his beloved Daddy, felt the disapproval, and compensated by being a womanizer and hurting others with dirty dealing — “manly” traits for a “non-manly “ guy. Bobby, on the other hand, was a big strong brawler like his Daddy, so Jock naturally preferred him. Ray too, to a degree. This is in full display in DOVE HUNT, in particular. Interestingly, when he had absolutely no other choice it turned out JR could handle himself pretty well physically - besting Cowboy Ray and ex-mafia tough guy Nicholas Pierce - even standing up to BD “Rambo” Calhoun at Traveltown. I’m guessing that until the ‘buffoon years’ fully kicked in, (Haleyville, etc) they couldn’t have their main draw be a Cliff Barnes level wimp. That and “plot armor”, of course.
