Mark Salling pleads guilty to possession of child pornography


Former Glee star Mark Salling has reached a plea deal in his child pornography case.

Salling has agreed to plead guilty to possession of child pornography involving a prepubescent minor, and will now serve between four and seven years behind bars

The court will also require him to pay $50,000 restitution to each of his victims as well as register as a sex offender and enter into a treatment programme for offenders.

Once he's eventually released from prison, Salling will be required to stay 100 feet away from schools and other locations where children gather. He's also banned from contacting anyone under the age of 18.

The 35-year-old actor was originally arrested back in December 2015 when Los Angeles Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Unit conducted a raid at his home.

By the following spring, Salling was formally indicted by the US Attorney's Office on allegations of receiving and possessing child pornography.

The Texas-born Salling most memorably played football player Puck for five seasons on Fox's Primetime Emmy Award-winning musical comedy series Glee.

Other notable film and TV credits include a supporting role in Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering and a memorable appearance in Walker, Texas Ranger.

Mark Salling has died from an apparent suicide, the Los Angeles Police Department confirms to Us Weekly. He was 35.

According to TMZ, which was first to report the news, the Glee alum’s body was found near a riverbed in the Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Salling had been awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in December to possession of child pornography involving a prepubescent minor. He had previously agreed to serve four to seven years in jail, in addition to registering as a sex offender and staying 100 feet away from schoolyards, parks, public swimming pools, playgrounds and video arcade venues.

The actor’s sentencing in the case was set for March.

TMZ reported that the actor previously attempted suicide by cutting both of his wrists in the bedroom of his home in late August 2017. He was reportedly rushed to the hospital underwent a psychiatric evaluation. However, Salling’s lawyer denied the story at the time, telling TMZ, “Mark is physically fine and … spending his time atoning and working on himself.”

Not to defend him, but the punishment for these sorts of things are wildly inconsistent, based on God knows what...

Not too long ago there was a case where a young mother recorded herself molesting her own one-year old son, and then sold the video to men who wanted to purchase it. When someone reported this, the men who'd purchased a copy were given much stiffer penalties than the mother who'd actually committed the rape of her baby son and then sold the tape.

Even worse, her lawyer asked that the rape shield law be applied to the case to keep her name out of the press, and the judge agreed! (Apparently, rape shield laws don't exist to protect the victims, but whoever the woman is in any given case -- even if she's the rapist and not the rapee).

Fortunately, her angry inlaws stepped in and successfully stopped the legal coddling of their daughter-in-law.

UPDATE with more details: The Los Angeles Police Department has more details on the death of Mark Salling. According to ABC7 Eyewitness News, his body was discovered hanging in a river in a remote area in the Angeles National Forest.

The coroner’s office later confirmed that the actor committed suicide by hanging. The LAPD responded to a report at 3 AM that Salling had gone missing and after an investigation, they found Salling’s body on the 11900 block of Big Tujunga Road at 8:50 AM.

PREVIOUS: Mark Salling, the former Glee star who last month pleaded guilty to child pornography charges, was found dead today in Los Angeles, a law enforcement official has confirmed to Deadline. The actor was 35.

The source said the death is being investigated by authorities as a possible suicide, and the coroner’s office is waiting to inform his next of kin and family members. His body was found near his home in Sunland, in northern Los Angeles.

The news comes just more than a month after Salling pleaded guilty to a federal offense of possessing child pornography, and ahead of a scheduled March 7 date for his sentencing.

As part of a plea agreement, Salling admitted he possessed some 25,000 images of children engaged in sexual conduct. He faced a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, but as part of the agreement was expected to spend 4 to 7 years in prison, followed by 20 years of supervised release and registry as a sex offender.

Salling made the plea deal after an investigation resulted in a vast collection of child pornography discovered on a laptop computer, a hard drive, and a USB flash drive. Salling had shown some of the images to a girlfriend, who reported him to the police. He was arrested in December 2015.

I'm sort of ... numb after I found out on Twitter ... I don't even know why. I feel very sorry for him and his family. He wasn't the best human being possible but he was fighting his demons and this is such a tragic end to his life. What a fall from grace, he went from being a breaking star of Glee to a sexual offender, the police discovered child pornography on his computer, he pleaded guilty in front of a judge last year ... I think he was supposed to start his prison sentence on March 7 of this year. Weird, sad, oddly tragic life ... I'm very surprised that some people were very happy about his death on Twitter, this is just shocking and disturbing. He was a deeply troubled guy but I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Suicide is NEVER an answer. Never, you can always turn things around but it's always YOUR own decision. Very sad news indeed.

Well...I'm not sure what to think of it.
I understand that every pedophile is a potential predator, but sometimes I feel sorry for these people because I don't think they choose to be pedophiles.
Do they have to feel guilty about being a pedophile? At the very least they have to acknowledge the problem.

And that's why I have a problem with:

As if it is something to make fun of. Then he wasn't taking it seriously enough, and I find that very, very wrong.

Is it sad that he killed himself?
While I do appreciate Edie70's humane comments, I think it always seems a bit sadder when that person is young, famous and - most importantly - pretty.
I remember feeling a bit sad when Bonnie & Clyde died (because they looked like Dunaway & Beatty) eventhough these characters were murderers.

We're supposed to be afraid of vampires, but..

It's a bit hard to judge these cases. I feel bad for those who are cursed with such depraved desires - as long as they fight against crossing the line. Those who don't fight against it, but instead feeds the desire should be treated as criminals, which is what they are.

I've heard that being said so often, but I'm not sure that I agree with it. Why can't suicide be an answer for SOME people? What makes ones owns life so incredibly sacred that you must live on? We say we have a right to decide about ourselves and our own body, so why doesn't that apply when it comes to suicide?

Sure, many problems can be solved. Depression, for instance. That can be cured, or at least be treated so it becomes more manageable. But all problems can't be solved. I think euthanasia should be legal. If you have an incurable illness that is too painful to live with, I feel that you should be able to get suicide assistance from a doctor, if that is what you want. I know that not being able to breathe is my biggest fear. If I got an incurable lung illness, I'd rather get an injection and die on my own terms.

In Mark Salling's case, I can see why he did it. Living with a sick desire and be outed for it in front of the entire world is bad enough. Being sentenced to a long prison stay and having your career destroyed could push anyone over the edge. And he knew that no one would ever forget. He would have to live with the disgust and shame for the rest of his life. Suicide suddently doesn't look too bad.
