Soaps In The 2020s

I think the only one that is in danger is Hollyoaks. Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale regularly top the ratings so they are in no danger and the first two of those have either just moved into or will soon move into a new expensive set so ITV seem to be committed to both of them for some time to come. Doctors has started picking up awards in recent years and has very strong rating for a lunchtime show so I can't see that going off air any time soon.

I know it's always the first to get thrown under the bus when these questions are asked but if any of the soaps were to go in the next few years, it'd probably be Hollyoaks. However, I could see something happening like Channel 4 dropping it but it continuing on E4, rather than it being outright axed (like Channel 10 did with Neighbours).

Of the others, they're still among the top rating shows on their channels and there's large investments in them (particularly CS & EE where they've forked out for new outdoor sets in recent years) so I can see them trundling on for another while. The over saturation of the ITV soaps will prove problematic in the long term though. They run the risk of burning themselves out and I'd say this'll be reflected in the ratings at some point. However, until something higher rating and cheaper to make comes along, I'd say we'll have Corrie, Emmerdale & EastEnders for another few years.

Doctors is actually quite good, I’m surprised it hasn’t been moved to the 5pm teatime slot rather than it being a lunchtime soap, it would certainly fill the gap of a “Midlands” based soap since Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire and London are covered.

Channel 4 have denied that Hollyoaks is in danger but, there must be some element of truth to it, while I can’t see C4 axing completely I can envisage them re-structuring the series to air fewer episodes, and moving it over to E4 as @Carrie Fairchild said.

I think the BBC might be taking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach as the show does quite well in it's early afternoon slot. They did air repeats in an early evening slot at one point years ago but I don't know if they were just using it as schedule filler or if they were testing the waters to see how it'd fare out of daytime.
