EastEnders Production on Eastenders suspended amid coronavirus outbreak

Australian soaps, Neighbours and Home and Away are both cutting their output to two episodes a week amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Effective from 30 March, both soaps will screen 30 minute episodes on Mondays and Fridays in the UK.

Production of Home and Away has now been halted and the programme temporarily removed from the seven network schedules in Australia.

From the perspective of the soap operas generally, not just EastEnders, the reduction of episodes broadcast per week to only 2 episodes is how the soap operas used to be, and the closest thing possible to the quality OVER quantity with less episodes and/or even return to former past glories.

It would be a good trend to continue in the long run, because there simply hasn't been a best soap opera at all since the 21st century from 2000+, and so, this is probably the best chance the soap operas have of achieving the quality they once had.

More importantly, it makes it easier for the cast of characters and the production team(s) also.

Bob Cryer plays Bob Dover. On Hollyoaks, he played abusive psycho gangster, Glenn Donovan. Apart from murdering his son, abusing his stepdaughter who was also his fiancée and turning out to be the real biological father of his son’s baby, he was a pretty unpleasant character, who eventually had a group of WAGs (Women Against Glenn) plotting his murder but then the local serial killer instead did it at the pub. Barry Cryer recently turned 85.

Is it just me or does it feel really weird watching the soaps now and seeing 'normal' life?

I wonder if they will bring what has happened into the soaps on their return.

If we end up with a gap will they have a time jump?

Well, you will have time slowing down for a while. Easter and the VE celebration will be later. Depends on how long they are out of production and other things. Then again, you sometimes have sets of episodes that take place in the same day or two. Like when Dynasty launched The Colbys and you had two episodes of Dynasty and two episodes of The Colbys taking place in the space of three consecutive days.

Maybe our soaps will need to stop being in real time.

I always felt they might eventually go down that road, so less episodes and bingeable. But if they did are they still soap operas? :confuse:

Oh, yeah. Still soap operas. Since when did Dallas observe holidays in the outside world? Still, I feel a tinge of sadness at the death rate in Hollyoaks decreasing. Three people have died from January onwards, two of them murders by first or second degree family members.

Of course, the added pleasure of watching old episodes of Hollyoaks is that you can count the high number of now dead characters on the opening titles. Say with the September 2016 title revamp, at least sixteen characters on it are now dead. Mostly murder victims because that is most frequent cause of death in Hollyoaks. Last night’s first Hollyoaks Favourites episode from 2013 had five murderers appearing in the episode, who eventually bumped off a dozen characters between them.

Well, ahead of the filming halt, Hollyoaks cast members were instructed to take costumes home, so they can continue to deliver new online content in character. Some cast members are also involved in other Hollyoaks At Home projects.

Well the cast of Dallas stated many times it wasnt a soap opera but was a continuing drama.

I think soap in its truest form is set in real time.
