Drumming up a dramatic thunderstorm in the village of Emmerdale (then Beckindale), 27 years before another big storm caused damage to the village.

The 1977 one didn't have any casualties, but caused a falling tree to cause damage to a young couples' home, and almost caused the premature birth of their baby.

Why are moments like this forgotten when they do retrospective programmes about Emmerdale? 30 years of..., Emmerdale at 40..., etc... (These type of programmes only seem to focus on happenings from the last 10 years).

Because ITV consider Emmerdale to be the inferior sibling to Corrie.

And they aren’t interested in anything about the show from before 1995, even the infamous Plane Crash of 1993/94 was barely given a mention in the Emmerdale @40 and that not only was the storyline that saved the soap from being axed but it revitalised the entire U.K. soap genre in general and was a landmark tv event,

Which is a shame because Emmerdale along with EastEnders has the best and richest backstory of all the soaps yet they never mention anything regarding the Farm years of 1972-89 and pre Dingle years of 1989-94

I do hope that changes with a celebratory show for the 50th in 2 years time. Without the early years of any soap, they wouldn't have the middle years and the here and now.

Emmerdale always gets picked on and accused of not being the same programme now as it was in the 70s or whatever!!!

They dropped 4 letters from the programme's title... Yet people still pine for just one word. :D

The archivist from about 8 years ago obviously paid no attention to the episodes of the 1970s...

I emailed to ask about the dramatic fires featured in the programme in 1977, and they said that they happened off-screen.

However, the episodes themselves dispel that claim...

If they even bothered paying a little attention to the episodes of the 70s and 80s, they would realise just how much drama they really had, and that the show was not just a half-hour of sheep dipping and bread making, etc...

I've never understood really why they regard one storyline as changing the whole show forever. Plane crashes do occur in the world, as do car crashes, bus crashes, storms (two major ones in Emmerdale's case). Sure, the technology used to produce the scenes and special effects, etc. had become more advanced since the 70s, but that's progress.

Imagine the BBC doing Doctor Who now with the same cheap special effects they used in the early 60s. It would look odd.

Because it was the storyline that perhaps saved the show from cancellation perhaps, and although other soaps did depict plane crashes before, this was the first time it was done on such a major scale and was aired 5 years and one week after the Lockerbie

And it did change the soap genre, soaps did more big disaster storylines in the years that followed

That’s why it’s a landmark storyline, plane crashes don’t happen that often for it to be portrayed

But the air disaster (and they've only had 1 in Emmerdale's 48 year history) was nearly 27 years ago now.... How is that possibly saving the show from cancellation now?

Actually, Emergency Ward 10 was the first soap to have a plane crash, way back in February 1966.

It garnered a lot of attention at the the and ITV were close to cancelling it in the early 1990s ergo the plane crash did save the show

I wonder what's saving it now then... 28 years later... :/

It’s a different era.

In 1993 soaps never faced competition from reality tv or streaming platforms, I wouldn’t say that Emmerdale is in a great position now, there are a lot of dead weight and boring storylines, it needs a shake up similar to the one made in 1993/94
