Hillary Clinton surpasses 1M popular vote lead over Donald Trump

Hillary-Clinton-surpasses-1M-popular-vote-lead-over-Donald-Trump.jpg

Hillary Clinton, seen here delivering her concession speech in New York City on Nov. 9, has 1 million more votes than Donald Trump in the national popular vote, but loses in the Electoral College.
  • WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Hillary Clinton's popular vote lead over President-elect Donald Trump has surpassed 1 million, according to an independent analysis.
  • Cook Political Report on Wednesday said Clinton had 62,403,469 votes compared to Trump's 61,242,652 votes.
  • Clinton's victory in the popular vote has generated criticism against the United States' Electoral College system. Following the 2016 election, Clinton's loss is the fifth time in U.S. history a candidate who won the popular vote did not assume the presidency. The last time was in 2000, when former Vice President Al Gore defeated then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush in the popular vote, but lost the recount in Florida -- giving Bush the needed electoral votes to win the executive branch.
  • Trump on Tuesday defended the Electoral College, despite calling the system a "disaster for a democracy" in 2012.
  • "If the election were based on total popular vote I would have campaigned in N.Y., Florida and California and won even bigger and more easily," Trump wrote on Twitter. "The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. Campaigning is much different!"
  • Votes were still being counted in several states.

I love how Trump is suddenly the Electoral College's #1 fan after previously calling it a "disaster for a democracy." Little did he know he was referring to himself.

Of course, if he'd lost the Electoral College and won the popular vote, he would've doubled down on his 2012 sentiments. It would've been in line with his reprehensible "I'll accept the results if I win" mantra. Yet another nugget for the endless Trump vs. Trump collection:

It's a rigged system.
Electoral college is what this country uses.. If we used the popular vote it does not mean Hillary would have won as both candidates would have ran completely different campaigns and visited different areas of the country..

Trump won and campaigned with the rules in place.. Not the imaginary hypothetical rules that don't exist..

You mean Trump might not have ran a campaign based on bigotry since that wouldn't necessarily appeal to the entire country?

Funny how both you and Trump were claiming just last week that the election was rigged. Unless he won. It's also interesting that all 5 times the presidency was won after losing the popular vote, it's a Democrat who got screwed. The only promising omen is that 3 out 4 of them ended up being one-termers. The lone exception was Dubya, who won re-election by the skin of his teeth.

He did not run based on bigotry... The dems ran on white shaming..

Oh but it was rigged.. Between all the voter intimidation, and the media all in on Hillary it was rigged.. Trump thankfully won in spite of it..

Dubya won re-election with a mandate.. And the republicans swept that year...

Liberty and justice for all does tend to shame a lot of white people.

Oh but it was rigged.. Between all the voter intimidation,
Funny how voter intimidation laws around the country were overturned by the federal courts in opposition to the Republicans who passed them. Also funny how Trump incited his supporters to participate in voter intimidation at the polls in direct opposition to the law.

and the media all in on Hillary
Yeah, I could tell that from the way they covered the non-story of her emails 24/7 the last 11 days of the campaign.

it was rigged..
Yes, the world's just not fair to greedy, old, white billionaires.

Trump thankfully won in spite of it..
Don't forget to thank James Comey while you're at it.

Dubya won re-election with a mandate..
Winning by a margin of 2.4% is hardly a mandate.

And the republicans swept that year...
They had a net gain of 4 seats in the Senate and 3 seats in the House, if you want to call that a sweep. Of course, just 2 years later in 2006, the Democrats had a net gain of 6 seats in the Senate and 31 seats in the House. And in 2008, they gained an additional 8 seats in the Senate and an additional 21 seats in the House. That's what I call a sweep.

No.. It should be for all.. The butthurt just want it for the butthurt..

Funny how voter intimidation laws around the country were overturned by the federal courts in opposition to the Republicans who passed them. Also funny how Trump incited his supporters to participate in voter intimidation at the polls in direct opposition to the law.
funny how most reports of voter intimidation came from liberal groups.. Yeah sure. "Fight back" equals voter intimidation..

Yeah, I could tell that from the way they covered the non-story of her emails 24/7 the last 11 days of the campaign.
she made her bed.. And the dems made theirs by making this criminal their candidate..
Yes, the world's just not fair to greedy, old, white billionaires.
it is not fair to any hard working person in a blue state..

Don't forget to thank James Comey while you're at it.
oh the time warp.. Lets have more dated bs arguments..Adams stole the election from Burr.

Winning by a margin of 2.4% is hardly a mandate.
again, they swept the dems out..

And because of the disaster that followed we will now have a president that will make america great again..

Thank you.

Yes, it's minority groups who've tried to take liberty and justice away from their counterparts.

funny how most reports of voter intimidation came from liberal groups..
Funny how I'm not aware of a single case of liberal groups passing or attempting to pass voter intimidation legislation.

Yeah sure. "Fight back" equals voter intimidation..
When "fighting back" breaks the law, it certainly does.

she made her bed..
Yes, the day she was born female in America.

And the dems made theirs by making this criminal their candidate..
A criminal who's never been charged, tried, or convicted of any crime. And who's been cleared of committing a crime by the FBI. Twice.

it is not fair to any hard working person in a blue state..
Funny how you didn't give a crap about blue states up until last week. Now 3 of them are suddenly your best friends.

oh the time warp.. Lets have more dated bs arguments..Adams stole the election from Burr.
James Comey helping the Republicans take out Hillary Clinton is a dated BS argument? :confuse:

again, they swept the dems out..
A total net gain of 7 seats in Congress is hardly a sweep. Just as winning the presidency by a 2.4% margin is hardly a mandate. And the Republicans already controlled the House and the Senate in 2004 so the Dems weren't "swept out" of anthing. They did, however, clean the Republicans' clocks and regain control of both in 2006. That was a sweep.

And because of the disaster that followed
The disaster that was re-elected in 2012. And will leave office with a job approval rating >50%. Compared to the previous disaster who left office with a 22% approval rating.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/bushs-final-approval-rating-22-percent/

we will now have a president that will make america great again..

Thank you.
He'll make America something again all right. It just won't be great. And I'll be amazed if he survives what will undoubtedly be his only term.

I Do not trust the source..
"The Cook Political Report is an independent, non-partisan online newsletter that analyzes elections and campaigns for the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, Governor's offices and the American Presidency."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cook_Political_Report

They can count dead people until New Years..
Then post a source you trust.

Hillary can take solace in this as she sits in a cell.
If the success of the rabid Republicans in that area over the last 24 years is any indication, I wouldn't hold my breath.

In Other News: Donald Trump was elected 45th President of the United States.
And lost the popular vote by 1.4 million. And counting.

The National Popular Vote bill is 61% of the way to guaranteeing the majority of Electoral College votes and the presidency in 2020 to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in the country, by changing state winner-take-all laws (not mentioned in the U.S. Constitution, but later enacted by 48 states), without changing anything in the Constitution, using the built-in method that the Constitution provides for states to make changes.

All voters would be valued equally in presidential elections, no matter where they live.

Every vote, everywhere, for every candidate, would be politically relevant and equal in every presidential election.
No more distorting and divisive red and blue state maps of predictable outcomes.
No more handful of 'battleground' states (where the two major political parties happen to have similar levels of support among voters) where voters and policies are more important than those of the voters in 38+ predictable states that have just been 'spectators' and ignored after the conventions.

The bill would take effect when enacted by states with a majority of the electoral votes—270 of 538.

All of the presidential electors from the enacting states will be supporters of the presidential candidate receiving the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC)—thereby guaranteeing that candidate with an Electoral College majority.

The bill was approved this year by a unanimous bipartisan House committee vote in both Georgia (16 electoral votes) and Missouri (10).

The bill has passed 34 state legislative chambers in 23 rural, small, medium, large, red, blue, and purple states with 261 electoral votes.

The bill has been enacted by 11 small, medium, and large jurisdictions with 165 electoral votes – 61% of the way to guaranteeing the presidency to the candidate with the most popular votes in the country

Sounds like a necessary reform Otto. Thank you for your input on the matter and welcome to our forum. :)

I'm not an American and I live in a country where our vote is split by percentage by the many different political parties. As a non-American it amazes me that what is claimed to be "one of the world's leading democrazies" has a system where 1 million votes doesn't count for anything. In a democrazy every vote should count and therefore I think the reform you're suggesting is a good idea. In fact I said something about how it was not fair that all the electoral votes went to one candidate rather than being split between the candidates on election night in another thread before I knew who would win the Presidency.
