Brilliant!!! Is Afton dead? I hope so.

Sorry!

(I’m not actually one bit sorry!)

Aw my baby. She doesn’t need to plead with JR to come back. He might have to wear a hazmat suit though to keep DISEASE away from his precious self.

Can’t James look after Beau and fek off?

Look at the emotion you’re bringing out in me!!! I’m a wreck!!!
LOL. I'm glad you like it, but don't want you to be a wreck.

I haven't fully decided on Afton's fate. Several others are gone for good though.

To answer your earlier question about whether or not JR *really* hated Sue Ellen after he found out about her and Ray, I guess the best answer is that he wanted to, he tried to, and maybe he convinced himself that he did. But there's a thin line between love and hate. JR and Sue Ellen walked right up to that line repeatedly...but no, I don't think they ever crossed.

Next update is almost done. Post it soon.

I don't own any of the characters in this story and no copyright infringement is intended.

This fic begins immediately after the events in "Conundrum," the last episode of the original "Dallas" story. It disregards both the TV movies and the TNT continuation.

With this story, I am hoping to give JR, Sue Ellen, and the entire Ewing family the ending I think they deserved.

"After All"

Part 49

*"*

The body count was horrific. Katherine and Cliff were both killed instantly in the blast, along with three nurses, a young resident, and an elderly man who had been on his way to his wife's room with some flowers. Afton suffered massive internal injuries and might not make it. There were half a dozen other innocent bystanders with serious injuries and twenty or so more people with scrapes and bruises.

Pam and Bobby were both fine. Cliff had saved their lives with his frenzied warning.

JR had rushed down to Pam's room as soon as he was told what had happened. He'd made Sue Ellen promise to call Harv and cancel his meeting with Mandy as well as ask him to figure out what needed to be done to make certain Cally's family could not take Beau from James.

Sue Ellen picked up the phone and dialed the number to Southfork. "Lucy?" She said when her niece answered the phone. "How soon can you get to the hospital? Yes. I know they aren't letting anyone in, but I can fix that. What's the use in having the Ewing name and power if I don't use it occasionally? Bring Ray with you. I need your help. No. I need you to get me out of here for a couple of hours. Of course I know it sounds nuts. Just do it, alright? I'll explain later. Thank you. See you soon."

Sue Ellen hung up the phone and turned to face the man standing by her bedside. "You understand what I need you to do?"

"Look, JR isn't going to like this one bit…"

"That's not what I asked you, Sargeant McSween," Sue Ellen snapped. "Do you understand what I need you to do?"

"Yes," Harry sighed. "Get Miss Ewing and Mr. Krebbs in. Then get the three of you out."

"Good. And don't you worry about JR," Sue Ellen said sweetly. "I'll smooth things over with him."

Harry nodded and left the room. Sue Ellen climbed out of her hospital bed, ignoring her pain, and walked to the closet that contained her clothes. Pam and Christopher were both going to be devastated by Cliff's death. Bobby would need JR's help with them both. Plus he had James and Beau to deal with…

Sue Ellen shook her head and tried to organize her thoughts. She was running out of time. James was going to need those documents from Harv very soon. She wouldn't have time to deal with that and with Mandy. She was going to need help. She had a sudden epiphany about who she should call.

JR had the weight of the world on his shoulders. She was going to do everything she could to ease his burden.

There was no way she was going to force him to deal with the Winger tramp now. She would handle the whore...and she would make sure that this time, she was handled for good.

Sue Ellen smiled a small smile when she remembered why JR had said about Mandy earlier; how it disgusted him that he'd ever thought he cared for her.Something...some deep and long buried doubt inside of Sue Ellen's soul had unraveled at those words.

JR had never loved Mandy, and Sue Ellen's years of insecurities over the younger woman had suddenly seemed so silly.

In his whole life, JR Ewing had only truly ever loved one woman - and that woman was her. She knew that deep her heart now - and she was going to make damned sure Mandy Winger knew it too.

***

"Dear God."

"Donna, I'm trying to get an update, but it looks like Cliff Barnes was killed in the attack."

Donna turned away from the news on the TV and fixed her wide eyes on her husband. "It looks like a war zone…"

"Yes," Andrew said softly. "I have confirmed that Ray wasn't at the hospital at the time of the explosion….but...Donna, I can't get any information about the rest of the family."

"I have to go to Dallas," she breathed out. "Right away."

"Yes. I'll arrange a plane for you immediately."

Donna made no reply. Instead she turned her attention back to the TV and said a silent prayer for the safety of her family.

***

"I have to go now, Jenna," Ray said softly. "But I'll call as soon as I know anything else. I love you."

He hung up the phone and turned to face his niece. "Ready to go?"

"Ray, this is crazy!"

"Yes," Ray agreed. "But Sue Ellen said she needed our help. I damn sure am going to give her mine. She's more than earned the benefit of the doubt. You with me?"

"Jesus," Lucy grumbled. "I mean yes...but JESUS!"

"Let's get going. I don't want to keep Sue Ellen waiting."

***

JR sat in a chair in the corner and watched Pam sob in Bobby's arms.

He closed his eyes and cursed silently. God knows he hated Cliff Barnes with every fiber of his being, but he never would have wanted this.

"I should go to Christopher," he finally said.

"Yes," Bobby looked up. "Thank you, JR."

JR nodded, stood up, and moved to the door. "Pam? I...I'm truly sorry for your loss. He died a hero. Never forget that."

"Thank you, JR," Pam sniffed. "That means so much coming from you."

JR shifted uncomfortably. "I'll stay with Christopher as long as you need me to," he promised.

He walked from the room and shut the door behind him. The hallway looked like a war zone.

"Mr. Ewing?" a uniformed policeman stopped him. "Do you need an escort?"

"Yes," JR replied. "I have to get to my nephew before he turns on the TV."

"Right this was, sir."

JR followed the officer and tried to remain calm. Katherine had better be glad she died in the blast, otherwise he would have killed her slowly and painfully himself.

***

"Hey! I saw the whole thing on the news! You guys going to the hospital?"

Ray cursed and turned to face Jack, who had just pulled up in the driveway and jumped out of his truck. "Yeah. But you probably won't want to go with us."

"Why?"Jack demanded. "They're my family too."

"Yeah but…"

"We don't have time for this!" Lucy snapped. "Just get in the car, Jack. I'll explain everything on the way."

"But Lucy…"

"We can trust him, Ray," she interrupted. "Please let's just go! Sue Ellen is waiting!"

Ray nodded and slid behind the driver's seat. Lucy was right. Every second mattered and Sue Ellen was counting on them.

***

"Do you understand what I've told you?" Sue Ellen said into the phone.

"Yes," came the simple reply.

"And I can count on you?"

"Absolutely."

"I thought so. Thank you."

"Of course. And Sue Ellen?"

"Yes?"

"Give that bitch hell. I'll take care of the rest."

"Thank you, Marilee. Talk to you soon."

Marilee put the phone down and turned to face Michelle. Jack had dropped the younger woman off on his way to Southfork. "Did you hear all that?"

"Yes."

"And you know this James Beaumont well, correct?"

"Yes. I was in love with him. A long time ago. We were even married briefly."

"Will he take your call?"

"I think so."

"Let's get this over with then."

"Okay. Marilee?"

"Yes?"

"I'm actually sorry about Cliff."

"Me too, honey," Marilee reached out to hug the other woman. "Believe it or not, me too."

***

The officer looked at Ray's license and then handed it back to him. "You can go straight to the emergency entrance. Sargeant McSween's orders."

"Thanks," Ray grunted, taking his license back.

"I can't believe Sue Ellen pulled that off," Jack said, his voice full of wonder.

"Sue Ellen Ewing is a force of nature," Lucy laughed. "Never underestimate her."

"Duly noted," Jack mused. "Duly noted."

***

"Uncle JR?"

"Yeah?"

"I heard the explosion. I see all the cops. I know everyone is whispering so I can't hear…"

JR turned off the TV and sighed heavily.

"We were only trying to protect you."

"From what?"

"Christopher… I have to tell you something. And it's going to hurt you…"

"Are my daddy and mommy dead?" Christopher cried out suddenly.

"What?" JR moved quickly and pulled the little boy into his arms. "No. No, son. You listen to me. Your mommy and daddy are fine."

"Then why can I only watch cartoons? And why is everyone whispering? Don't lie to me, Uncle JR. I'm not stupid."

"No," JR agreed with him, pulling back slightly to look down into the boy's eyes. "I know you're not stupid. Son, your mommy and daddy are fine, like I said...but your Uncle Cliff…"

"Is dead?"

"Yes," JR told him softly. "But he died protecting your mommy and daddy. He died a hero, son."

Christopher sobbed deeply and wrapped his arms around JR's neck.

JR held and soothed him as he cried. He loved that boy, and it broke his heart to see him in so much pain.

***

"James, do you understand what I said?"

"Yes. The emergency custody papers will be delivered to the county superior court here as soon as it opens."

"Yes. Will that make things easier for you and your wife?"

"It will keep Cally's brothers from taking Beau, so yes, it will make things easier."

"Alright. I'm going to let you talk to Mrs. Stone now. She is handling the lawyers."

"Wait, Michelle! Are you...I mean...how are you?'

"I'm doing alright, James," she told him. Michelle handed the phone to Marilee and stood up. "I need to lie down. He is on board."

She walked from the room without another word. Talking to him again had been painful, but at least it was done and she'd never have to talk to James Beaumont ever again.

***

"How did you get roped into this?" Sue Ellen asked Jack as she slid into the back seat beside him.

"Wrong place, wrong time."

"JR is gonna kill us all," Lucy groused from the front seat.

"I'll handle JR," Sue Ellen said smoothly. "Let's just get this over with. Hopefully I can get back to the hospital before he realizes I've gone."

"I hope so," Ray groaned. "Cause God help us all of you don't."

OH MY GOD!!!!

Ok first of all - I am SO HAPPY that our girl is getting her moment with - the Whore from Hell - love it!!!!! I hope she finds it as satisfying as I will and I hope to God she smacks her clean in the mouth.

Second - I’m so sad about Cliff! Please let Afton die too to take away the pain!

Third - Lucy is fabulous - loving she’s in this!

Four - Loving the family dynamics!!! Wish there had been more of these antics on the show.

I about melted in a sticky mess when Sue Ellen said ‘I’ll smooth things over with JR’ OH MY GOD. :mega:
And thank you for clarifying that Sue Ellen IS and always has been the ONLY woman JR truly loves.

If The Thing of Evil needs any help understanding this, I will jump into the screen to help Sue Ellen, with diagrams if necessary.

But I think The Queen got this.

Fabulous update!!!!!

This is so good!
I'm cringing at the comments about JR though, they keep secrets and then promise they won't and then do it again. Eek...

"After All"

Part 50

*"*

Mandy sat at the table in a large conference room in Harv Smithfield's office and drummed her fingers impatiently. JR was late. That was so unlike him. He was ALWAYS on time for everything. He prided himself on his punctuality.

Of course, she'd seen the news. She had fully expected for JR to cancel his meeting with her to be with his family, and was a little shocked when Smithfield had told her it was going on as planned.

She couldn't wait to see him. She knew he would be very angry with her, but she also knew that deep don, he would be happy to see her. JR cared deeply for her, whether he would ever admit it or not. Sue Ellen or no Sue Ellen, she believed in her heart that would never change.

Her heart skipped a beat when she heard the door open from behind her. She sucked in a deep breath and stood up. "JR," she said breathlessly...but the brilliant smile on her face faded as soon as she saw the person who stood in the doorway.

"Sorry to disappoint you," Sue Ellen said with mock sweetness, "but JR is occupied with someone who is actually important to him. I'm afraid you're stuck with me."

***

"Of course I'll meet you at the airport, Mitch," Lucy said into the phone, "but what are you going to do about Pammy? No. I know. I guess she'll be fine with the nanny until you know more about Afton. Yes. I'll see you then."

"Mitch is coming in?" Ray asked when his niece hung up the phone. He watched as she walked from the receptionists desk to a chair beside him in the waiting area of Harv's office.

"Yes," Lucy sighed. "The hospital called him. It doesn't look good. There may need to be a decision and he's Afton's next of kin."

"Where in the hell did Katherine get a bomb?" Jack wondered out loud.

"I don't know," Ray answered. "But she's always been really rich and really resourceful." He glanced at his watch and grimaced. "Sue Ellen needs to hurry up. If we don't get her back in her hospital bed before JR finds out she's missing, there's gonna be hell to pay."

***

"This is a legal letter of intent from Mr. John Ross Ewing, II. It states that he intends to take custody of the minor child the moment his mother passes away. It clearly states that the child is not to be removed from your custody until he makes arrangements to have him brought to Dallas. We will use this letter if she dies before you get the DNA test results back or if they come back indicating you and the child are not related."

James nodded and took the papers from the lawyer.

"This one," the lawyer said, taking a second set of papers out of his briefcase, "is a legal relinquishment of all claim to the child and approval for you and your wife to begin adoption proceedings. We'll use this one if we have the test and it proves that the boy is your brother. Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"Fine," the lawyer closed his briefcase and stood up. "Please call me at my office the moment you get the test results or.."

"Or she dies,* James finished softly.

"Yes."

"How much is all this going to cost me?" James asked.

"Mrs. Stone has already taken care of paying for my services," the lawyer informed him. "We'll speak soon."

James said nothing else as he watched the lawyer leave Cally's hospital room. He knew he needed to call Debra Lynn and let her know Beau's custody had been handled, but he didn't have the energy to talk to her right now.

Cally was going to die. The doctors were clear. It was only a matter of time.

The only thing standing between Beau and a Halleyville nightmare was JR Ewing's good intentions. A knot formed in the pit of James' stomach at that thought. He knew JR well enough to know that JR's intentions rarely had anything good about them.

***

"I didn't come here to see you," Mandy spat out. "I came to see JR."

"That's just too damned bad," Sue Ellen snarled. "Because you are going to sit there and listen to what I have to say. Then you're going to get on a plane, go back to Scotland, and you're never going to bother me or JR ever again."

"You are so insecure. You know he still has feelings for me. That's why you're here. You know if he sees me again, he might not come back to you."

Sue Ellen laughed bitterly and shook her head. "Not so long ago, that was true. I feared you. I feared the strange hold you seemed to have on the man I love. But it's not true anymore. Not after last night."

"Last night?"

"JR knows all about me and Ray, Mandy. He has known for a very long time. Still he loves me. He still chased me. He still brought me home, back into his bed, and he still asked me to marry him again."

"I don't believe you," Mandy gasped. "JR would never forgive you for sleeping with his brother."

Sue Ellen shook her head slightly and reached into her bag, pulling out several folders. "These are copies of two palimony suits, Mandy. The first you filed...and later dismissed against JR. The second you filed against Norman Andrews. I believe that one was settled out of court, wasn't it?"

All the color drained from Mandy's face at the mention of Andrews' name. "How did you...those records were sealed! There's a non-disclosure agreement."

"It doesn't matter how I got them," Sue Ellen informed her coldly. "The point is that I have them. You can go to the press with a wild tale about me and my brother-in-law if you wish. But it will end badly for you. Don will testify under oath that the "Dallas" script was inspired by my life, but that most of the events are fiction. Ray will testify that he never laid a hand on me."

"That's all lies!"

"Your word against ours," Sue Ellen shrugged. "And once these files are leaked...well, your credibility will take quite a hit when the whole world knows you filed two nearly identical palimony suits against two different very wealthy and very married men, asking for millions in damages."

"Norman… he used me…"

"Oh, I have no doubt. But Norman Andrews is a very famous director. You knew he was married when you started sleeping with him, just like with JR. You used him too, Mandy. He helped your career immensely."

"He tried to destroy me. That's the truth Sue Ellen."

"No one will care what the truth is, Mandy."

"No. They won't."

"Get on that plane. Forget about JR once and for all. Or I promise I will burn your life, your career, and everything in this world you care about to the ground."

Mandy choked back her tears and stood up. "I don't really have a choice, do I?"

"No. You don't. And Mandy?"

"What?"

*Don Lockwood is a good man. He cares for you. You could do a lot worse. As for JR…"

"What about him?"

Sue Ellen stood up and moved towards the door. "Remember that day so long ago when you confronted me in a restaurant and told me it was you JR wanted, in bed and out?"

"Yes."

"You were wrong then. And you're wrong now. JR has always wanted me. He is consumed with his want for me. No other woman can ever give him what I can. No other woman can ever make him feel as good as I do. He loves me. He loves me fiercely. Do you know why?"

Mandy wiped her tears from her cheeks and shook her head.

"Because he knows I love him. He knows no matter what, no matter what sneaky, mean, black hearted thing he does, I will ALWAYS love him. And no woman, not you, not anyone, will ever be able to compete with that."

Sue Ellen squared her shoulders, stiffened her back, and walked proudly from the room, leaving a stunned and tearful Mandy behind her.

"Ray?" She whispered when she made it back out to the waiting area of Harv's office.

"Is it done?" He asked, standing up and walking to her.

"Yes. Mandy will never be a threat to our family again...but…"

"What? What's wrong?"

"I… I don't feel so well. I think you had better get me back to the hospital right away."

Mandy brought this on herself. There were loads of men I'm sure who she could have had without all the manipulation
I feel for James and Cally, it's all so depressing no matter which way you spin it.
I wonder where JR has been diverted to? Hmm.

I feel like I am pretty well done with Mandy Winger now. She may make a couple more appearances just to wrap things up (probably needs a scene with JR) but feel like she's been dealt with.

I wanted SE to have a chance to confront her one-on-one in this fic. I also wanted to show SE finally came to understand within herself that Mandy was no real threat to her. Hope I did okay.

I'm also sorry about Cliff. But I kinda wrote him into a corner with all his evil deeds. At least he got to go out as a hero and wasn't completely ruined like he was in the TNT show.

"After All"

"The explosive device was handmade. We found some Instructions in her hotel room. Looks like she copied them from a book in the local public library."

JR looked at McSween with disgust. "Every cop in Texas was looking for her, but she still managed to sashay into a library in downtown Dallas, figure out how to make a bomb, buy all the materials, rent a hotel room, and get into the hospital. Doesn't inspire much confidence in law enforcement, does it?"

"JR," Bobby warned under his breath. "What about her accomplice? What about the nurse?"

"We apprehended her boarding a bus to Houston. She's being questioned now."

"Alright, Harry," JR growled. "Keep us posted. I had better get back to Christopher…."

JR stopped in mid sentence when a nurse barged into the room without knocking. "Yes?" He snapped.

"I'm sorry. I was just checking to see if Mrs. Ewing was in here with you."

"She's in the bathroom with another nurse getting cleaned up," Bobby told her.

"No," the nurse shook her head. "Not THAT Mrs. Ewing. The OTHER Mrs. Ewing..Mrs. Lockwood."

"Sue Ellen? She's in her room…"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Ewing, but no she isn't," the nurse interrupted JR. "We...we can't seem to find her…"

"What do you mean you can't find her?" JR's voice was full of panic. "Harry! Could Katherine have had another accomplice? Could they have Sue Ellen?"

Harry took a deep breath. "Calm down, JR. Sue Ellen is fine. I know exactly where she is."

"What?"

"I guess I'd better tell you everything. God help me and everyone else involved because you're not going to like it one bit."

***

Lucy ended the call on her mobile phone and shook her head. "He's going to kill us all."

"How much longer until we get to the hospital?" Jack asked. "Sue Ellen is fading pretty fast back here."

"5 minutes," Ray answered, glancing at Jack in the rearview mirror."

"McSween said go straight to the ER. There's a medical team waiting for her there," Lucy sighed. "And JR is waiting for us."

"Hope you guys have your wills in order," Ray grunted. "Because we might not be alive much longer."

***

"Dr. Richards?"

Peter reached out and pressed a button on his intercom. "Yes?"

"Your next appointment is here."

"Send her in."

"Yes, doctor. Also Michelle Stevens called again. I have told her repeatedly that you can't speak with her, but she claims it's an emergency."

Peter sighed heavily and shook his head. He had referred Michelle to another psychologist so it would be highly unethical for him to talk to her. "How did she sound?"

"Hysterical," came the short reply.

"Fine. I'll call her after my next appointment."

He knew he really shouldn't speak to her, but given the news of the explosion at the hospital this morning and the death of Cliff Barnes, it might be dangerous to ignore her.

***

'Do you understand what I've told you, Christopher?"

Christopher looked up at his father with wide eyes. "Yes. Uncle Cliff is gone. He died saving your life."

"Yes," Bobby kissed the top of his head.

"I want to see Mommy."

"Are you sure you're ready for that?"

"Yes. Please. I need to see her."

"Okay, son. I'll have a nurse bring her to your room."

"Thanks, Daddy." Christopher relaxed in his father's arms. "Is Aunt Sue Ellen okay?"

"Yes," Bobby couldn't help but laugh. "But Uncle Ray might end up in the hospital too once JR is done with him."

***

"Mr. Ewing! Please back away so we can treat her!" The doctor was losing patience with both JR and Sue Ellen. "And Mrs. Ewing, stay still and let us look at you."

"No!" Sue Ellen snapped and twisted out of his reach. "No one is touching me until I talk to JR!"

The doctor growled and backed away.."Fine. You have two minutes."

JR waited until the doctor and nurse left the cubicle and closed the curtain. "If I didn't love you so much I'd wring that long, sexy neck of yours! What were you thinking, Sue Ellen?"

"You listen here, JR!" Sue Ellen snapped back at him. "I did what I had to do! Beau is safe and Mandy is handled. There was no other way!"

"It could have waited, Sue Ellen."

"No it couldn't have!"

JR clenched his jaw and silently counted down from ten. He was furious. But...he was also proud.

He let his eyes study her carefully for a moment. She was incredibly pale. Her breathing was heavy and it was clear that she was in a lot of pain. "We'll talk about it later, Sue Ellen," he finally said. "You let those doctors take care of you now."

"No," she growled. "Not until you promise me you'll leave them alone."

"Them?"

"Ray and Lucy and Jack. I mean it JR."

JR smiled in spite of himself. He bent down over her bed and brought his face down to hers, so close their noses touched. "I know damned well who is to blame here, and it's not them. I promise I'll leave them alone. But as soon as you're feeling better, I may have to give you a spanking for scaring me so badly."

Sue Ellen let out a labored giggle and nodded. "I'll consider that a promise, JR."

***

"Michelle," Peter soothed, "I'm sure if you make an appointment with Dr. Guthrie, she can help you work through this."

"No!" Michelle cried. "I don't like her! She makes me uncomfortable! I feel like she's…"

"Like she's what?"

"Judging me."

"I can refer to a different doctor if you'd prefer but…"

"No! PLEASE doctor Richards! Cliff is dead! And I had to talk to James today about his wife and kid…"

"James?"

"My… I loved him. But JR broke us up and now…"

"JR?"

"Yes. James is his son. And now I'm afraid I'm starting to have feelings for Jack. He was married to my sister…"

"Another Ewing?"

"Yes. Please. It's all so complicated and I really need to talk to you so you can help me sort it out."

"Alright, Michelle. I have an opening at 4:00. Can you get here then?"

"Yes! Of course! Thank you so much!"

Peter hung up the phone and sank back into his chair. He was getting ready to commit a serious breach in ethics. Michelle sounded desperate. She needed help...and she needed help quickly.

Plus…

She seemed to have multiple connections to JR Ewing. He would help her, but he saw nothing wrong with using what she could tell him to find a way to get close to Sue Ellen.

This might end up being quite the blessing in disguise.

***

Ray eyed JR carefully as he watched the other man emerge from the treatment area of the ER and come fully into the waiting room. "Here we go," he whispered to himself under his breath.

Lucy stood up and nervously approached her Uncle. "I know you're mad as hell, JR, but please let us explain…"

"There's nothing to explain," JR cut her off. "I know exactly what happened. Sue Ellen used your love for her and your guilt to get you to go along. You," he pointed at Jack, "just got caught up in it all by mistake and are too damned dim to have stopped it. But you, Ray…" he narrowed his eyes on his brother's face, "you knew exactly what was going on. You know how dangerous it could have been to sneak Sue Ellen out of here. You knew how damn mad I would be. You did it anyway."

"Yes," Ray admitted with a shrug.

"Yes," JR repeated. "Thank you."

"Wait…. What?" Lucy asked, stunned. "You're thanking him instead of killing him?"

Ray chuckled and JR nodded.

"See Lucy," JR told her, "Sue Ellen Ewing is the most stubborn woman who ever lived. She made up her mind she was going to do this. Ray knows if he'd said no she would have called a cab, or hell crawled across broken glass to get where she wanted to go. This all could have ended very badly. Ray helped her so he could keep an eye on her."

"That's right, JR," Ray agreed.

"Jesus," Lucy groused. "This whole damn family is nuts."

"Excuse me. Ray?"

Ray felt his whole body stiffen at the sound of the soft and familiar voice. He closed his eyes and clenched his jaw. "Donna?" he finally breathed out.

"Yes," Donna gave him a weak smile. "I got here as fast as I could."

***

"Mommy? Is that really you?"

Pam sucked in a deep breath when she saw Christopher. He was sitting up in his hospital bed. He looked so big, so grown. He wasn't the baby she had left behind so long ago.

"Yes, Christopher. It's really me."

Bobby watched in silence as the nurse pushed Pam's wheelchair fully into the room and parked it directly across from Christopher's bed. He wasn't sure this meeting was a good idea, but it was what the boy wanted, so he had agreed to let it happen.

"Uncle Cliff.." Christopher's voice broke off into a sob.

"I know, baby. And I know Uncle Cliff had some problems, but he loved you very much."

"I know. I loved him too."

They talked quietly for a long time. Christopher made no move to hug her, or even to touch her and Pam didn't push him. Bobby sat quietly in a corner and prayed that Pam would give their son the time and space he needed to heal.

***

"She bought herself a few more days in the hospital, but no real damage done," the doctor said to JR. "She's back in her room, resting comfortably. We have given her morphine for the pain so she may sleep a while."

"Thank you, doctor."

The doctor nodded and walked away. JR turned his attention back to his niece. "You had better get on to the airport. Mitch will be landing soon. I'll see you when you get back."

"I'm not coming back in," Lucy told him. "I'll drop him off and head back to Southfork. John Ross has been alone with Teresa and Raoul all day. I need to get back to him."

"You're not going to stay and help Mitch with Afton?"

"Afton isn't my problem," Lucy answered shortly. "And neither is Mitch."

JR nodded but made no reply. He wondered what had happened between Mitch and Lucy that inspired so much bitterness in her.

He finally stood up and stretched. "I'm going up to Sue Ellen's room. Tell John Ross I love him and I'll call him later." He bent down and placed a light kiss on her forehead. "And I love you too, girl."

"I know," Lucy smiled at him. "Love you back."

***

"Where are you staying?"

"The Carlton," Donna told Ray. "I don't expect to be in town very long. I really only came because we couldn't get any verifiable information and I needed to see for myself that you were okay."

"Am I supposed to be touched that you care?"

"Of course I care, Ray. You're the father of my daughter."

"Seems to me like you're more content with Senator Dowling filling that role than me."

"Ray.."

"You can see I'm fine, Donna. Go back to DC. You aren't needed here."

Donna watched him sadly as he turned on his heels and stalked down the hallway. Coming to Dallas had been a huge mistake.

***

JR jumped at the sound of the ringing phone. Sue Ellen had been asleep for hours and he had drifted off himself. He reached over, snatched the phone off the bedside table, and brought it up to his ear.

"JR Ewing. Yes. Yes, I understand. Do you need...is there anything I can do for her? The funeral expenses or...anything at all? Alright. Yes. Talk to you then. And James? I am truly sorry. Really."

He hung up the phone and closed his eyes tightly. Cally was gone. Sue Ellen would be so upset. John Ross would be devastated.

And there were still no DNA results. JR had suddenly become the sole legal guardian of a son he had never even laid eyes on.

Aww no-one got in trouble. Loved JR here.
Not happy with Ray though, there was no need for him to speak to Donna the way he did.
And poor Cally. I hope they can get Beau before the goons show up.

"After All"

Part 52

*"*

Jenna hung up the phone and glanced over at Miss Ellie. They had carefully prevented her from reading the newspaper or watching television, but it was time to tell her what had happened in Dallas.

Cliff Barnes was dead. Katherine Wentworth too. Pam was back. And so was Donna too it seemed.

Ray had gone out of his way not to make a big deal out of it, but she knew him well enough to know that seeing Donna again had affected him deeply.

Maybe it was time for Jenna to get on an airplane too. Ray was her husband now. If anyone needed to be by his side while he helped his family deal with all this drama it was her. She couldn't afford to stay in Switzerland and let Donna take her place at Ray's side.

***

"Sure you don't want to come in with me?"

Lucy cast a disgusted glance at her ex husband and shook her head. "Yes. I'm sure."

"Look, I get that you're still angry with me…"

"I'm not, actually," Lucy cut him off. "I stopped being angry a long time ago. I just don't feel anything at all anymore, Mitch. Now, I did what I said I'd do. I picked you up from the airport and I brought you to the hospital. This is the end of my obligation."

"Lucy…"

"Get out," Lucy whispered shakily. "Please just go."

Mitch opened the door and slid out of the car. He watched her drive away and wondered if she would ever get over any of it. It was all so long ago, but she seemed just as angry and bitter as she had been right after it first happened.

***

"I'm so sorry, honey. I know you cared for her very deeply."

"Oh, JR," Sue Ellen cried, clutching at his chest. "She was so kind and sweet and GOOD. What an awful waste."

"Yes," he agreed, "it truly is."

"Excuse me, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need JR for a second."

JR untangled himself from Sue Ellen's arms and followed Harry into the hallway. "What is it?"

"You'd better get down to the lobby."

"Why?"

"Mandy Winger is down there. She's demanding to see you. Ray is trying to keep her calm, but she's making quite a scene. Security is getting nervous and you know as well as I do that if they throw her out…"

"It'll make the papers," JR growled. "Go down and tell her to find a conference room to wait in and I'll be down in a bit. I need to get Sue Ellen settled."

"Alright, JR."

"And Harry? Make sure Ray stays with her. I don't know what she wants but I damn sure know I am gonna want a witness."

***

"You sure I'm not in the way?"

Jack laughed and shook his head. "Hell no. I appreciate the help. And the company."

Michelle smiled at him, "some help. I'm not much of a bartender."

"You can hand out beers while I make the drinks. Deal?"

"Deal!"

She felt so much better after talking to Dr. Richards. He'd helped her sort through her feelings about Cliff and James and had made her realize she was over analyzing her budding friendship with Jack. Best of all, he'd agreed to take her back on as a patient full time.

For the first time in ages, she felt good about her future. She had Dr. Richards to thank for it all.

***

"You seem to be in a good mood."

Peter smiled at his wife as she placed his dinner in front of him on the table. "I helped a patient make a major breakthrough today."

"That's wonderful," Molly smiled.

Peter said nothing as he cut into his pot roast. Michelle was exactly what he needed to get back into Sue Ellen's life. And best of all, he had her complete trust. She would never suspect that he had his own selfish motives for agreeing to treat her.

"Peter?" Molly's voice interrupted his thoughts. "I asked if it was good."

Peter smiled and nodded at her. He knew she was talking about the pot roast, but his mind was still on Sue Ellen. "Yes, very good. Best I've ever had."

***

Ray stood up when JR came into the room. "Want me to wait outside?"

"No," JR instructed him. "You stay right there."

He took his hat off and threw it on the conference table. "Alright, Mandy. I'm here. What do you want?"

"Thank you for seeing me, JR," the words rushed out her mouth with breathless air. "I promise I won't make any more trouble for you. I know you love Sue Ellen...but…"

"But what?" he snapped.

"I have to know something, JR. I have to know if it was ever real between us. I need to know if you ever really loved me."

JR glanced at Ray who shrugged his shoulders slightly. He turned his gaze back to Mandy and took a deep breath

"I could lie to you, Mandy. It would make things easier for you and make you feel better. Is that what you want me to do?"

"No, JR. I want the truth."

"Fine," JR said gruffly. "The truth is that I never loved you. I...cared for you. For a time. I have cared for a lot of women. Julie. Serena. Cally. Vanessa...you...but I have only ever loved one woman in my entire life."

"Sue Ellen," Mandy whispered brokenly.

"Yes," JR said, his voice turning soft and gentle. "Mandy...when you came into my life…"

"What?"

"I wanted to love you. I truly did. You were so pretty and sweet...and the way you looked at me…"

"Yes?"

"It reminded me of the way she looked at me, before I turned her love into contempt. I thought she was lost to me. She was...absent. I didn't even exist to her. She wouldn't even fight with me anymore. She just drank and moped. I thought she was gone. But you were there. And warm and loving and I tried, Mandy. I truly did. But the minute she paid the slightest bit of attention to me, even with an insult…"

"You wanted her back."

"Yes."

"You never wanted to keep her when you had her, JR."

"No. I was a fool. Those days are over, Mandy. I'm not getting any younger. I want to spend the rest of my days with her, making her as happy as I should have made her from the beginning."

"You're going to remarry her?"

"As soon as the ink is dry on her divorce papers."

Mandy nodded and stood up. "I understand, JR. And believe it or not, I actually hope the two of you are happy."

JR watched her move past him towards the door. He reached out and lightly touched her shoulder. "Mandy, I'm sorry we hurt you. I'm sorry I worked so hard to make you love me when it was always Sue Ellen I really wanted. But, just so you know...I talked to Lockwood. There is a fine man who actually does love you. Maybe you should give him a chance."

"Maybe I will," Mandy whispered. "Goodbye, JR."

JR watched her leave, then caught sight of the grin on Ray's face. "What?!"

"Oh, nothing, JR," Ray chuckled lowly. "Nothing at all."

***

Lucy stroked John Ross's hair and soothed him as he cried out his grief.

She has been sad to hear about Cally too. She had been a sweet girl. It was cruel that fate had taken her so young.

JR had reluctantly given James permission to call John Ross and tell him about Cally. The boy was devastated. Lucy was at a complete loss as to how to comfort him. "Do you want to call your parents?"

"No," John Ross sniffed, pulling away from her. "I know Mama is sad, but I don't want to talk to my dad right now."

"John Ross.."

"I know it's not his fault, okay? But he never loved her and he was mean to her and I don't want to talk to him right now."

"Okay, John Ross. Want something to drink? Do you think you could eat something?"

"Maybe later. I think I should call Christopher though. I know he probably needs to talk about his mom."

Lucy nodded and marveled at his maturity. He was wise well beyond his years. He was kind and empathetic and level headed.

JR and Sue Ellen had raised a fine young man - in spite of themselves.

***

"Take it away, JR."

JR stood and took the dinner tray away and put it out of sight. "I know it's been a rough day, Sue Ellen, but eventually you're going to need to eat something."

"I know," she said sadly. "But I can't stand the sight of food right now."

"Alright, sweetheart."

"John Ross will want to go to the funeral."

"Yes."

"You can't take him. You need to stay away."

"Yes."

"Lucy?"

"I'll talk to her."

Sue Ellen nodded and settled herself down onto the bed. "I need to go see Christopher tomorrow."

"Alright."

"JR?"

"Yeah?"

"If that DNA test… I mean, if Beau and James aren't brothers...what are we going to do?"

"I don't know, Sue Ellen. I honestly don't know."

Ugh JR was WAAAY nicer to :tv:than she deserved, but if it gets her to finally piss off...
As for the advice both Sue Ellen and JR gave, I just have to say RUN DON!.
Peter's obsession with Sue Ellen is still creepy af, he seems quite unstable himself, how did he qualify?
Quite liking the relationship between Jack and Michelle too.
Don't care about Miss Whiny, but it makes sense she wants to mark her territory.

Ok sorry just catching up due to illness myself.

I LOVE Sue Ellen and I'm so proud of her. Thank you for giving her her moment with that silly bitch from hell. I wish she had died in the explosion too - but that would have stopped Sue Ellen and JR having their chance. I do wish that JR had been a little nastier to her though - especially for what she put Sue Ellen through. I don't understand why Don wants her - Mandy is scum, pure, vile simple (very simple) scum and I think Sue Ellen would be insulted by him going with her. She deserves to be alone. EVIL EVIL pure unadulterated EVIL. She should be dumped like radioactive waste. Anyone need me to clarify my feelings on that one? :tv:

Love Lucy to bits, John Ross and Christopher too and I actually really love hearing JR and Lucy say they love each other. It's really sweet.

Can't wait to see where Peter is going in the story. I always enjoyed that storyline but I do want JR and Sue Ellen to have some peace now.

I'm with @Honkytonkangel - Pam does nothing for me, I can't be bothered with her feeling the universe centres around her and as for Afton - I'd have her maimed and disfigured, before adding her to the radioactive waste pile.

No one can hold a candle to Sue Ellen in terms of bravery, resilience, determination or the pure love she has for JR. It's powerful. She is powerful.

Thank you for 3 brilliant updates. Really looking forward to more!:clap::clap:

I made the mistake of reading this last night before going to bed. I wasn't able to fall asleep for a long time afterwards. :(

I was sad to see you kill off Cliff. It feels like such a waste. :(
Also I can't remember is it in this story that Pamela Rebecca is autistic or was that your last story?

Lucy was really cold to Mitch. I mean his sister could be dying. So he could use some support. I do hope Afton pulls through. I always liked her.

Poor Donna feeling left out. She should see Miss Ellie I bet she would welcome her.

I couldn't care less about the Sue Ellen and Mandy confrontation since in my mind Sue Ellen won over Mandy on the show. Their story was resolved so I saw no use to bring her back in the first place. Still since you did I guess it's just as well that Sue Ellen put her in place again. But I am concerned about Sue Ellen's health.

I hate that you killed off Cally. :(

She is such a sweet character who deserves a happily ever after with some other man and a proper family after the crap JR put her through. He was really nasty to her when he grew tired of their marriage.

Still her death does open up for some interesting plot developments. I can't wait to see how JR and Sue Ellen will cope when the boy arrives at Southfork.
