So basically, unless you're so dadgum far to the right it's not even funny, according to Trump, you're part of the swamp that needs to be drained?! Unbelievable!

How funny this should come out today:

Newt Gingrich on Trump's often-stated promise to "drain the swamp" in Washington

I'm told he now just disclaims that. He now says it was cute, but he doesn't want to use it anymore. ... I'd written what I thought was a very cute tweet about "the alligators are complaining," and somebody wrote back and said they were tired of hearing this stuff
.

So basically, unless you're so dadgum far to the right it's not even funny, according to Trump, you're part of the swamp that needs to be drained?! Unbelievable!

Do they really give a damn about anything but themselves and their hatred for liberals, Hillary, the Obamas, the media, etc.?

If they really cared about the national security being endangered by Hillary's emails, they'd be concerned about the Russian hacking. But they don't give a damn about it. Preserving legitimacy of his election is more important, so they're all in denial about it.

So Trump can break all of his campaign promises and brazenly say "that works better before the election - now we don't care about it, right?" or blatantly abuse the presidency to line his coffers all he wants.

They don't give a damn about any of the stuff. It's just primitive football fan mentality. They just wanted their guy to win and the other team, which they despise, to lose. And they'll let him con them and rob them blind, as long as it's their guy doing it.

That's been the rhetoric coming from the average Trump supporter from the get go, so it's not surprising. Trump's mostly known for his far right immigration policy, foreign policy, and Muslim policy, which excites the right wingers.
Of course, Trump also campaigned on protecting social security and medicare, as well as being against the TPP. He even spoke in favor of gay rights after the night club shooting in Orlando, placing him to the left of Hillary Clinton circa 1993 to 2013. Of course, as Obama's shown, what's said in a campaign can just be part of a strategy to win votes.

Two corrupt, insincere candidates ran against each other, and one of them had to win. As it turned out, it was the one who did a better job convincing Americans that he would protect their jobs and was against politicians being beholden to their donors. And while Trump back pedals on many campaign promises, I have no doubt that Hillary would have done the same on the leftist positions she grudgingly adopted. All either of them cared about was getting elected.

Do Democrats care about anybody but the establishment, their donors, and their hatred for actual progressives?

If they really cared about the national security being endangered by Hillary's emails, they'd be concerned about the Russian hacking. But they don't give a damn about it. Preserving legitimacy of his election is more important, so they're all in denial about it.
Hacking into a private email server shouldn't be tolerated or condoned. On the other hand, a political party conspiring to make their chosen candidate their nominee shouldn't be tolerated or condoned either. So while I don't approve of how that information was obtained, I'm still glad the public had access to it.

So Trump can break all of his campaign promises and brazenly say "that works better before the election - now we don't care about it, right?" or blatantly abuse the presidency to line his coffers all he wants.
Hillary went back on being against Bernie's "pie in the sky" promises during her campaign. How do we know she wouldn't have reversed herself yet again during her presidency? She's not exactly the most consistent person herself.

And does anybody really believe she wouldn't have used her presidency to line her coffers as well?

They don't give a damn about any of the stuff. It's just primitive football fan mentality. They just wanted their guy to win and the other team, which they despise, to lose. And they'll let him con them and rob them blind, as long as it's their guy doing it.
If Democrats were as concerned with ethics and policy as they claim, I don't believe they would have chose Hillary Clinton as their nominee. To me, the "I'm with her" crowd are just as partisan as staunch Trump supporters.

By "they" I meant the Trump voters, whose primary concern in life is beating "libtards" at any cost. As for the DNC, yes - I do believe they're ultimately better for the country, despite having their own selfish agenda.

I don't find the contents of the disclosed emails remotely upsetting as the fact Russia and its thug of a leader - not just a foreign power, but the arch enemy of the US - meddled in the democratic process in the US.

I get the persistent bitterness over Bernie, but it's counter-productive. The Trump/Pence menace and their cabinet of horrors needed to be prevented from entering the White House. Even after Bernie got the shaft.

I'd never put my hand in fire for Hillary Clinton, but I'm absolutely positive she wouldn't have so blatantly and brazenly reneged on core campaign promises several weeks before the actual inauguration. The arrogance of Donald Trump and his con-happy supporters is unprecedented. "Unpresidented", too. The semi-literate buffoon.

Again, I was referring to the voters. And I see no equation between Trump and Clinton supporters. One look at what was behind each candidate at their respective rallies (or what that adulation-hungry clown continued to have on his self-indulgent "thank-you tour") is sufficient to spot the gaping difference. The Clinton supporters can live in a bubble, yes, but I'll take that any day over the rancid ugliness of the Trumpster ilk.

Yes, the people with that mentality do make up a large portion of Trump voters.

However, Jon Stewart addressed the fact that all Trump voters are being "defined by the worst of his rhetoric." He said he has friends who are not afraid of minorities, but are afraid of their insurance premiums. That seemed to be the tone of several Trump voters at the Bernie Sanders town hall recently. Their concerns stemmed over social security, government spending, and jobs. Some of them even denounced Trump's rhetoric against Muslims and immigrants. The sad fact is Trump did a better job campaigning to protect social safety nets and American jobs.

I didn't buy into it because I know that Trump is a con man. However, I can understand how some people believed him. Like Stewart, I hate to see Trump voters treated as a monolith. I'm a liberal, but I don't want to be defined by the leftists who promote "safe spaces," are against free speech, and use identity politics to bash straight, white, cis gendered men. Hillary Clinton has been in favor of anti-gay marriage laws, the Iraq War, mass incarceration, and the Patriot Act, yet I don't believe everybody who voted for her are in favor of neocon policies.

As for the DNC, yes - I do believe they're ultimately better for the country, despite having their own selfish agenda.
Marginally, perhaps, but the amount of neocon policies supported by Obama and Hillary is staggering.

The Democrats refuse to clean house, and Nancy Pelosi said she doesn't believe the voters want a change in direction. So as long as they keep telling themselves that everything is fine, I don't see much changing.

I don't find the contents of the disclosed emails remotely upsetting as the fact Russia and its thug of a leader - not just a foreign power, but the arch enemy of the US - meddled in the democratic process in the US.
I for one find the content of the emails very upsetting. A major political party was working to undermine the non-establishment candidate by plotting to bury the debates, attack his religion, and portray his supporters as violent. In the Podesta emails, Hillary revealed she has both a "public and private" stance on the issues. All of that is troubling to me. That obviously doesn't excuse Russia's hacking, but it did expose the DNC's biased scheming.

Of course, if it was revealed that Russia had tampered with voting machines and ballots, I would be much more outraged than I am right now. I don't condone what they did, but I appreciate the transparency it provided.

Also, as I've previously noted in other threads, Hillary wanted to undermine the Palestinian election in 2006.

I get the persistent bitterness over Bernie, but it's counter-productive. The Trump/Pence menace and their cabinet of horrors needed to be prevented from entering the White House. Even after Bernie got the shaft.
Hillary needed to give the voters a reason to vote for her, other than saying Trump is deplorable. It was a campaign based on the ugliness of her opponent, not on the actual reasons why people should vote for her. She talked down to millennials and Bernie supporters during the primaries, then grudgingly sought their support at the convention. She didn't think she needed to campaign in the Democratic stronghold of the rust belt, and lost because of it.

Trump/Pence are awful. But when Trump says he's against the TPP, and does a better job campaigning to protect Social Security, Medicare, and jobs, you're doing something wrong as a Democrat. The voters wanted a populist.

Yes, I agree with that.

The "rancid ugliness" of any staunch, myopic voter is appalling. And while I will concede that that kind of behavior is more likely to come from a Trump supporter, I still refuse to believe they're all like that.

On the flip side, there are Hillary supporters like Laci Green. Before the election, she said we need to "mend, heal, and restore the U in USA" regardless of the outcome. After the election, she said "F*** you, white America. F*** you, you racist, misogynist pieces of shit." So much for her empty platitudes of mending our broken nation. That's just one example. Let's heal, but only if my candidate wins. If Trump wins, you're part of an evil monolith.

Hillary herself only labeled half of Trump supporters "deplorable," and said the rest felt that the government and the economy let them down. She also said they were afraid of losing their jobs, and were desperate for change because they believed nobody cared about their lives and futures. She hit the nail on the hit perfectly, yet never managed to connect with their needs in a meaningful way. Things like supporting the TPP didn't help either. The fact that she was grudgingly pushed to the left made even the best of her policies come off as just lip service.

Oh, this is so funny. Newt, the piggy-faced surrogate who - sadly for him - didn't get a cabinet post, now de-testicled by Trumpelthinskin again over the NPR interview. Further confusing Trump's pea-brained supporters, they now claim slashing the Boeing order is part of "draining the swamp". Never mind the billionaire cabinet. LOL, you can't write this stuff.

I'm willing to give Trump a chance, but his cabinet picks don't inspire confidence. Trump went after both Cruz and Clinton for their ties to Goldman Sachs, and has since chosen Goldman Sachs executives to be in charge of the economy and the treasury. A restaurant CEO who is against increasing the minimum wage, broader overtime pay, and government regulation has been chosen to be in charge of labor. He's also been accused of labor violations. His pick for attorney general is vehemently against the legalization of marijuana. His education secretary pick supports school vouchers, which funnels public money to private (including religious) schools. She has also never worked in the public school system, and said she viewed education reform as a way to "advance God's kingdom."

Why bother "draining the swamp" if you're going to refill it with people who are just as bad, or worse? As for social security, Republicans are already proposing to cut it. It will be interesting to see where Trump stands on the issue once in office. I hope he keeps his campaign promise and vetoes the bill, but I remain skeptical in the mean time.

Centrist Democrats prove that like sticks to like. Trump's supporters are accused of playing for a team and having a "primitive football fan mentality." Yet when Democrats break ranks and vote their conscience, as I did, they are mocked and ridiculed for it. It's hypocrisy, and it proves Hillary's most staunch supporters clearly have that football fan mentality as well. If they didn't, they wouldn't attack Democrats who broke from their team.
Funny how the Democrats who complain about Trump and his supporters are quiet when it comes to Hillary's flaws. You never hear them mention Hillary's atrocious record on foreign policy, criminal justice, and welfare reform, or how she's flip flopped on the minimum wage, gay rights, and TPP. On the subject of universal health care, she said "People who have health emergencies can't wait for us to have a theoretical debate about some better idea that will never, ever come to pass." That's our Democrat folks. Not only did she dismiss the idea of single payer health care, she didn't even want to have a debate about it!

All the while misleading articles have been released stated Russia "hacked the election," giving the impression they hacked the election results. In reality, they hacked emails from the DNC and released them to Wikileaks. That's hardly the same thing as hacking the outcome of an election, but that's the spin being put on it by Dems who lack integrity. And speaking of lacking integrity, they believe the DNC's schemes to sabotage Bernie's campaign is a non-issue. Even Hillary's "public and private" stance on the issues doesn't bother them. All they care about is how the release of that information might have hurt Hillary's chances. If that doesn't show these people play for a team, nothing does. Another issue Dems are silent on is that face that Hillary can be heard on audio stating we should have prevented elections in Palestine unless we controlled the outcome!

Then vile Trump comes along, yet campaigns to the left of Hillary on issues such as Social Security, NAFTA, and TPP. Meanwhile, Hillary neglects the rust belt because she figures she has it on lock. Then she mocks millennials for essentially being unaccomplished dreamers who want free stuff, making her sounds more like a member of the GOP than a Democrat. But by all means, continue explaining to us why she deserved to win.

But by all means, continue explaining to us why she deserved to win.

I get it - Hillary Clinton is horrible, she's beyond contempt, she didn't deserve to win, she's the most hideous excuse for a human being to ever walk the face of this planet, goddamnit I'm going to vomit just thinking about her, yada, yada, yada.

But at the end of the day - as much as you love to equate Clinton and Trump - your vote conveys Donald Trump was a superior candidate. Only 2 candidates could've won the election and by re-directing what would've been a Democrat vote -- had your beloved Bernie won the nomination -- towards an insignificant candidate, you essentially aided the Republican candidate.

Hillary Clinton was of course a flawed candidate. But the gruesome twosome of Trump & Pence was much worse and had to be stopped. But who cares about that as long as your conscious is clear and you stuck to your principles.

When you win by a razor-thin margin in electoral college historically placing your meager win in the 46th out of 58 places ("landslide" or "movement" -- lying Kellyanne Conway's butt), all the while you lose the popular vote by a record-breaking 3 million votes, any malevolent influence including the Russian hacking or Comey's 11th hour breaking of the Hatch Act could've easily swayed the outcome of the elections. Trumplethinskin admitted to being surprised by the outcome himself.

I don't understand why some Democrats talk about sticking to one's principles like it's a bad thing. How many workers lost their jobs because of NAFTA? How many people died in Iraq, or were denied due process because of the Patriot Act? How many poor mothers didn't know how they were going to feed their kids because their welfare benefits were cut? Neocon polices aren't any less painful when they are supported by a Democrat.

She also ran a lousy campaign. Mocking millennials, telling Rachel Maddow she didn't need to adopt any of Sanders's policies because she was winning, not campaigning to workers in the rust belt states, etc. Hillary and her supporters put off this arrogant feeling of entitlement to our vote, without having to put in the work to earn it. She eventually realized she needed progressives to vote for her as well, and adopted several of Bernie's proposals at the convention. Considering her tendency to reverse herself, who knows if she would have followed through. There's a reason her campaign focused more on the ugliness of Trump than the virtues of Hillary.

And yes, there is a lot of ugliness surrounding Trump. He's petulant, he's superficial, he's a blowhard, and he's not above attacking people for their looks or disabilities. He proposed killing the family members of terrorists, banning Muslims from entering the country, and forcing Mexico to pay for a wall. On the other hand, Trump also came out strongly in favor of Social Security and Medicare, was against NAFTA and TPP, and was against politicians being backed by the banks. For perspective, social safety nets, trade, and politicians being owned by the banks were three key issues where Trump actually campaigned to the left of Hillary.

Does that mean I believe he was a superior candidate? No. I always saw him as a bullshit artist, and his filling of the cabinet with bank executives is proving me right. At the same time, I can see why people wanted to throw a brick through the window at the establishment. And while campaign promises can be broken, the fact remains that Trump did a better job convincing people he would protect their jobs and entitlements.

I voted third party, not because I believe Trump was the superior candidate, but as a vote of no confidence in either of the mainstream party candidates. We can debate which one is worse until we're blue in the face, but the fact is the number of wars we're in increased under Obama, as did the NSA's surveillance program. Hillary was a part of all that, just like she was involved in her husband's socially conservative policies of the 1990s.

Agreed. That's why it's best not to admit you have both a public and private position on the issues. It's also why your party shouldn't conspire against your opponent. You never know when that might be leaked. ;)

I'm well aware that nuance, principles, and anti-establishment rhetoric is not popular here.

Although the election wasn't close in 1972, it was in 1968. And a percentage of the 1968 liberal electorate voted for Nixon, or just didn't vote, because they refused to cast their ballot for LBJ's vice president Hubert Humphrey who wouldn't publicly disavow LBJ's Vietnam policy.

In retrospect, a strategic mistake. Some defended it decades later, and others did not.

Is that the best Democrats will continue to offer us? Vote for me because my opponent is worse.

The DNC wanted the more flawed, necoon candidate to be their party's nominee, and party leaders believe voters don't want a change in direction. Any faith I had in the party and the system is gone at this point.
