What a great story! But such a shame you froze. Did you manage to get his autograph? At least you met him I suppose.
I never got his (Dan Marino’s) autograph. My freezing that day is one of my biggest regrets. But then as luck would have it I walked into a bookstore about 10 years ago and there he was again. This was about 16 years after meeting him that first time and this time I was ready. I was gonna walk right up to my hero and start up a conversation.
And you know what happened? I froze again LOL!! Yep, I sat there the whole time and never went up to him. I don’t even tell anyone these stories cause I’m so ashamed. I’m probably the only person that was in a room with one of my childhood heroes twice and absolutely froze both times.
. I was lucky I had time to prepare to meet Linda.
Maybe it’s all in the preparation. I’m prepared now, I really am. If I get a third chance I’m talking this time.
That's what I was afraid I'd be like. I feel I got to just the right "place" in my mind if that makes sense. I felt braver than I normally do, had a bit of confidence that I never have and was still in control of myself....well only just!!
Not me. My bravery leaves town when I meet a celebrity. I’ve met a few other ones and it’s kind of the same thing every time. I get overwhelmed but overall they were mostly positive experiences (with the ones I could talk to).
I've yet to post about meeting Patrick recently over on the Dallas thread. Posters over there seem to be fading away thick & fast. I hope it's only temporary.
I just read your post about meeting Patrick. What a great story! I’m glad he was so receptive to you and your son.
The Dallas threads are a little slow right now but I’m sure that will change again. Maybe you and I scared them all off?
I must quickly say about the time I went to London's West End to watch The Graduate actually with Linda Gray. I took my seat and was sat next to a famous tv sports presenter. I felt awkward for him at first and just made a little chit chat and told him I thought he was great when hosting The Wimbledon tennis tournament here.
My then husband was totally star struck and kept staring at him, enough for this person to make a comment. Anyway, after leaving our seats for a short time we returned to find the famous person had swapped seats with his wife so I was now sat next to her. He must've thought we were going to keep on to him, but far from it, I wasn't that much of a fan of his. My then husband's behaviour didn't help either I guess. I do feel a bit sorry for the person, but surely they're used to that? We weren't that bad, just couldn't believe normal everyday me sat next to him about to watch my idol, but maybe we came across worse.
What a funny story! I guess they must get used to us badgering them. I’m sure they must sense our excitement at meeting them and at the same time it must all be a little scary for them as well. Now that I think about it they must really appreciate me and the way I go into hibernation when they meet me. I must be a breath of fresh air.
I'm so pleased you've somehow managed to change your mind set. That's very difficult to do so you've done really well.
It took a lot of years to realize there was nothing to be mad at anymore. I love the holidays again, and I won’t let anything change that ever again.
I've been lucky enough in the past to have jobs where I didn't have to work over Christmas, but I'm now in a job where I'm required to. It's really difficult thinking about Christmas when I have to work, but I've done it before and just have to make the best of it.
But if there’s anything that can change my mind about the holidays again, yes, this would be it. My job can put a damper on the holidays for sure. We usually work all day Christmas Eve and I’ve never liked that, but it is what’s expected of me.
But somehow there is a small community of these things called customers that I deliver to, and wouldn’t you know that no matter how mad they make me or how crazy they drive me the month of December, they just find a way to ruin my bad mood and make me feel appreciated at some point. And it’s always at the point I need it the most.
So when their dogs are chasing me, or they’re yelling at me for being late, or their 5 cars are blocking the driveway and making my job difficult, or when I’m muttering to myself as I drive around Christmas Eve in the dark, or when I trip over their decorations and injure myself for the 25th straight year, that’s when I remind myself that I’m doing it for them. I’m doing it for their families. I’m doing it for their husbands and wives. I’m doing it for their kids. I’m bringing them their toys, their brand new phones, their medication and clothes. I’m bringing them food and water. I’m bringing them their live plants and fruit, even live animals. I’m bringing them tables and chairs and who knows what else?
But that’s how I get through it, cause in the end, for some reason I’ll never understand, it gives me satisfaction and the right to say I help people for a living.
And then Christmas Day I just collapse on the couch in whoever’s house I’m in and I can’t move, but they totally understand that.
Busy lives take over unfortunately. I hope you soon get back on track with it. I've been reading your posts on the other thread and can't remember if it's baseball or American football. Please excuse my ignorance, I don't know about either, but your knowledge about it makes for interesting reading.
Oh, thank you LML! Someone started a baseball thread in the sports section during the playoffs and well, you know DFF jumped all over that one. I thought I was seeing things when someone wanted to discuss baseball on this site. He thought he wasn’t going to get any responses but I think I proved him wrong, and we’re still chatting over there.
I spent Halloween abroad this year for the first time ever. My daughter sent me pics of the pumpkins she'd done and had a load of sweets ready for the trick and treaters. It was nice to see her take on my role and I think she really enjoyed it.
That’s a nice story about your daughter! You must be so proud that she could take over that role for you. Halloween is here and gone so fast. Too fast!
I think above all (after the candy) my favourite part is seeing the creativity with what people decide to wear. That’s always fascinated me.
Hope I've managed to catch up somewhat. Hope you're keeping well DFF and take care for now.
You catch up at your own pace. There’s no pressure here. Besides, you’ve been busy over on the Dallas threads I notice LOL
You take care as well LML and everyone have a nice weekend!!
