Excellent post about Vincente Minnelli @ginnyfan. :)
I agree with you that he is very underrated as a director. The opening shots of the Big Sur in "The Sandpiper" are filmed in such a beautiful way. I just love the scenery in that movie and he really knew how to make the most out of the location.

Too bad that you missed voting in this round. I think if you had it's likely that another movie would have won! ;)

Also since you mentioned "The Long Long Trailer" as your favorite let's spotlight it:

It's basically a movie about a couple going on their honeymoon in a trailer and it has the stars from "I Love Lucy" in it. :)

Bette Midler is an American actress, singer and comedian. She was born on December 1st, 1945 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. She is Jewish and is of Russian, Austrian, Hungarian and Polish descent. Her mother was a seamstress and housewife and her father was a housepainter. Midler moved to New York City in 1965. There she began her career on Broadway. She also collaborated with Barry Manilow who co-produced her first album The Divine Miss M that came out in 1972.


Bette Midler’s movie career took off with the movie The Rose (1979). Over all she’s made about 30 movies. But which one is your favorite?

Have to pass this one too. I haven't seen any of her movies. I've only seen her in TV series. Most notable on Seinfeld. "Rochelle Rochelle - a young girl's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk." :lol::lol: I actually have a T-shirt with that line.

I haven´t seen "The Rose" yet, but it´s on my watching list of Bette´s films, along with a few others.

Miss Piggy says that Bette is always mimicking her in her interviews...since Bette´s beginnings in the late 70´s. She feels terribly outraged by that, by the way. Even so, they both are ladies and kissy-kissy each other at the parties...

Okay so we have a tie between your two favorite Bette Midler movies...

Bette Midler portrays Mary Rose Foster who is a rockstar in the 1960's known as "the rose". By the time we meet her she's burned out and is caught in a self-destructive lifestyle of drugs, sex and rock'n roll and too much booze. She's an alcoholic. She is having difficulties to cope with the pressures of her career and her greedy business manager. She falls in love and thinks her life will be better. This american drama film was Bette Midler's big break through and the lead song is one of her most famous numbers. She also won a Golden Globe for it. The movie was directed by Mark Rydell and the story is rumored to be based on Janis Joplin's life.

The 1990’s

This decade was the last both of the century and of the millennium. It is characterized by the digital revolution and the globalization that followed. Internet turned the world into one big global market and the economy became more dependent on the world market. The standard of life improved in many parts of the world. This was the decade when VHS were replaced by DVD’s and it became common that people had computers at home.

The boarders in Europe were quickly opening up as the European Union kept growing and a joint currency were underway. Due to the united Europe and no major wars in the USA this decade is often considered as a period of relative stability and peace in the world. But the decade was not without wars. The breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991 lead to wars and genocide on the Balkan Peninsula that weren’t resolved until the end of the Kosovo war in 1999. This decade also saw the Gulf war, the Rwandan genocide, the start of the Somali civil war and in 1996 the Talibans seized control over Afghanistan. The decade also saw a rise in terror attacks in the USA and school shootings like the one in Columbine became more common.

Some notable world leaders include: Bill Clinton, Boris Yeltsin, Nelson Mandela, Slobodan Milosevic, Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat, Jiang Zemin, Helmut Kohl, John Major, Jacques Chirac, Hosni Mubarak and Pope John Paul II.

In 1997 Princess Diana died and united the world in an outpouring of grief that has never been seen since then. On TV youth oriented shows became hits, most notably were shows like Beverly Hills 90210 (1990-2000) and Friends (1994-2004). Musically techno, hip-hop and house were in. It was also a decade when TV stars more often started to make the transition to becoming movie stars. But which movie produced in this decade is your favorite?
