If it had been on a streamer, where would you have thought it best-- Netflix, Hulu, what?

Showtime! Men get naked in that...!

Even the reunion movies that were written by original developers of the show had some historical mistakes, but I can forgive that. The reboot just went too far off the path, and it didn't help that Cidre excluded the reunion movies from the timeline. They should have had a true fan of Dallas head the reboot. She clearly only watched a handful of episodes to get a feel for the show. She did some things right, but what she did to the Cliff character really stands out. Awful.

Not that anyone asked, but for me, I would say Dallas truly ended with the reunion movies. I could go a step further and really say that I think it should have ended after season 13. Taking the later years for what they were, that would have been the best place, in my opinion, to call it quits. What do we get with the 14th season? No Miss Ellie, April being killed after all the time spent developing the Bobby/April relationship, and then, ultimately- a suicidal J.R.? No thank you. Dallas ending with JR being dragged off into a psychiatric facility would have been kind of fitting.

Funny enough, I remember when that particular season finished airing (DVD season thirteen) there was rumors in the media in the UK that Dallas had been axed in America! Of course it did come back for another season but there was again rumours in the media that this was the show's final season & although it was intended to be cancelled on the previous season it was given an eleventh hour reprieve. I remember all that being reported in the Daily Mirror. :)

And let's not forget our emotional attachment to a series. I have a strong connection to Dallas because it reminds me of a time, both good and bad. Of course Lorimar Dallas doesn't receive a free pass either because I can become quite vocal about the series in its later forgettable years. I think this is why reboots and continuations tend to struggle because we the viewer tend to place our favorite series on a pedestal.

So when a commercial network or producer wishes to resurrect a classic they should really understand the root cause of why that show had such huge success. Still, it would be difficult to replicate a series like Dallas in today's entertainment environment when its competing against other commercial networks, cable, satellite, streaming services and social media in general. Eyeballs are being pulled left, right and center unlike in 1978 when a family would gather around a single television.

Is there a market for a series like Dallas? Yes. But I believe it now belongs on a streaming service, well away from the stiff competition which exists between the commercial networks who only wish to produce that inane reality crap anyway.

The only other requirement is seeking out those creative people who have a passion for solid storytelling, actors who wish to be actors, not seeking fame and fortune.

Well said.

One thing that makes me wonder is the networks all offer such similar types of things because they say that's what people want. Well, if they're what people today want, why are so many getting canceled so early? They'd probably say a Dallas style show wouldn't work today, but since nobody has tried airing one, they really don't know that it wouldn't be a success. I don't mean another Dallas show - just a show in the style of Dallas.

Just for clarity can you define your idea of the “style of Dallas?” I’d also be interested in what anyone else has to say what they think is the “style of Dallas.”

That's a tricky one. Lorimar Dallas began as a simplistic story between two warring families but expanded into something deeper. On the surface Dallas offers the impression it's all about cattle and oil. The series however expanded to include ground-breaking social issues, told with sensitivity. To me the style of Dallas is adult contemporary drama. Not a drama created for teens like most series are today but a drama created specifically for adults.

Well if you want something a bit different buy yourself the new completed collection of Return To Eden.

The original 1983 mini series is a classic in my opinion. The 1985 sequel series is retooled as a Dallas style series and is set seven years after the events of the mini series. Both of them are pure escapist drama and well worth a watch. :)
