It's not often a celebrity death makes me gasp, but this news did. I've loved her for ages and I'm glad she was convinced to star in SCHITT'S CREEK against her own (admitted) laziness.

I've never really thought about it, but I suppose I could classify myself as a "fan" of Catherine O'Hara. I've only seen snippets of her SNL work or her role on SCHITT'S CREEK, but they're quite funny.

I always think of O'Hara as Delia Deetz in BETTLEJUICE (1988), which my dad seemed to watch endlessly when I was a kid. Her performance of "Day-O" during the dinner scene is comedy gold. The movie itself, at least for me, is a comedy classic, and O'Hara is definitely one of the brightest pieces of the story.

And then there's HOME ALONE (1990) and HOME ALONE 2 (1992), where she manages to pull some funny moments out a routine mother role.

I was surprised to hear about her passing, and was frankly a little shocked she was 71.

I remember her small but effective role in the Scorsese black comedy After Hours back in the 80s. She was great as the slightly unhinged Mr Softee truck driver who ends up leading the chase after Griffin Dunne's character through the streets of Manhattan...

Also liked her early Liz Taylor clip in the comedy TV sketch shows posted above, and her improv skills in the film Best in Show.

Given the media coverage, O'Hara may be destined to become more famous in death than before.

And she's an example of why things like SNL just aren't funny enough without enough Moon in Cancers.

As someone who was born in the early 80s, I'll always remember her for movies like Beetlejuice and the first two Home Alone movies.

Not only was she a great comedic actress, but she also could show a lot of heart when needed. She was similar to John Candy in that way, whom she played off well.

This one definitely hurts. That said, I saw a meme that made me chuckle a bit. It took me a minute to get it, but once I did, it put a smile on my face:

During O'Hara's SCTV days, she was part of a soap opera spoof called The Days of the Week. Her character Violet was a rich, airheaded socialite who spent all her time with her idiotic maid, Mojo (played by Andrea Martin). Her scenes were always filmed in soft-focus to give it this weird, ethereal quality. It was YEARS before I realized that Violet and Mojo were direct parodies of Another World's Iris and her maid, Vivien.
