The propriety of not seriously investigating politicians* for optics of looking like Third World jailing of opponents is the blanket immunity politicians count on; maybe it should become the norm for all them of them to be thoroughly investigated. If they don't want to be found guilty of committing crimes, they could try not committing crimes.

*The Clinton investigations always looked like political theater; I think Republicans would have been flabbergasted if they had turned up anything tangible.

It's often difficult to discern between investigations that are legitimate and those which are political theater because they usually lead nowhere regardless. The investigations themselves seem to matter more than the outcome anyway. As long as an opponent is under investigation, the other side can campaign off of it. That's how you get chants of "lock her up" for Hillary and "the walls are closing in" on Trump. Even the media gets involved based on their respective "team." Each camp not only pontificates over the "imminent" demise of their sworn enemy, they also cheer it on. In the end, it all feels like theater. There's valid reason to believe both Trump and the Clintons violated the emoluments clause and are war criminals, but that's basically "acceptable" corruption now. They'll never prosecute crimes which are tolerated across the political spectrum.

Trump probably won't be indicted over this just like Hillary wasn't indicted over the email scandal. The people who pay for having classified material are the whistleblowers.

Like Krystal, I lean towards the incompetent packrat theory. Trump surely knows he would be the prime suspect if Saudi Arabia ended up with classified nuclear documents.

Either way, it still amazes me that there aren't protocols to prevent such sensitive material from leaving the White House in the first place.

I mean, what difference would a trial have made anyway? SCOTUS pretty much made presidents kings and Trump easily could have claimed he took the documents in an "official act."

I disagree with the judge as to her reason for dismissal, but it was really the only practical things to do.
