As I've said before, I can handle Season 6 (despite its flaws) better than drab, cluttered Season 5. But, yeah, nuVicky, the godawful music --- ugh.
I always felt season 6 was like a rebirth of the series. It is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Although I really liked the early seasons, season 6 actually turned out to be my most favorite season since most of the storylines were interwoven and the relationships between Maggie / Richard and Richard / Angela just reached their peaks. The score was something you had to get used to, but many of Mark Snow's character themes are incredibly good and actually elevate the storylines to a higher level.

I also saw Season 6 as a kind of renaissance for FC, even if there were things I wasn't crazy about inside it.
And to think they got rid of Cole to make room for him.
It was actually the other way round. Billy expressed his wish to leave because he was not happy with the writing. I must admit that Cole had less and less to do after the surrogate storyline was over after approximately two thirds into season 5. Billy's request to leave was the reason for the writing staff to create the part of Ben Quick, later renamed Dan Fixx during development. Fixx was not created to terminate Billy.
As far as Billy's departure was concerned, the writing and producing staff was looking for alternate possibilities, of course.
The producers also offered Laura Johnson to stay, at least for a limited time (probably to see where and how this would bring the storyline forward), but that could have apparently resulted in a gender-wise unbalanced main cast and the lack of possibilities to create a new love interest for Vickie and later Melissa. Also, Laura was not fond of the idea to get a low number of episodes guaranteed only and maybe be written off after those, so she chose not to come back for season 6 at all.

I've watched the first seven seasons of FALCON CREST and maybe the first twelve or thirteen episodes of Season 8. I still say I'm going to finish the show one day, but the glacial writing pace that they introduced in the eighth season just worn my out. And then there's the Ortega clan. Melissa was one of my favorite characters, and to replace her with someone like Pilar is just mind-boggling to me.
Season 1 laid a good foundation, while I'd argue Seasons 2 and 3 are peak FALCON CREST. Season 4 started to show signs of wear, and Season 5 just lacked any true focal point as it swelled into melodramatic drabness. Season 6, for my tastes anyway, was actually quite good and I could go along with some of the new directions and changes. Season 7 just made things too silly and there were so many guest stars and short-term story-arcs, that I can honestly say there were times I hadn't a clue who was on the screen and what was going on. Season 8 slowed things painfully down and I got bored real quick. Season 9 intrigues me, but who knows if I'll ever get to it.

Yes, at least Season 6 had a renewed energy, despite its flaws. Season 7 is just a mess -- a mess (as I've said before) that is frenetic and silly.
I'm 7episodes in and weirdly I'm quite enjoying this season. The fast paste storylines, with season ending type cliffhangers each episode, is a refreshing change to the usual pace of a season. Yes, it's quite silly and this might become annoying, but so far so good.

Are you enjoying it more than Season 6? I just find Season 7 too fast-paced.
There are some storylines that are downright boring but given the fast pace and the accelerated pace I'm watching it at, they fly by.
I'm just over half way through season 7 now and it's really a mixed bag. The episode when Richard and Maggie finally get wed was one of the most enjoyable of the whole series, yet the stupid 'everyone trapped in the house in a storm' follow up was just dreadful.
