In a statement released today (December 6), his agent Sally Long-Innes said: "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning.
"He died peacefully with his family around him."
Besides his most recent stint as Maester Aemon in HBO's Game of Thrones, Vaughan also appeared opposite Ronnie Barker in Porridge, memorably playing the scheming 'Genial' Harry Grout in a three-episode appearance.
"I more or less accidentally turned up in something special," Peter once said of playing Harry. "The scripts were brilliant and I loved the part.
"It was an unlikely setting for a sitcom, a bunch of men in prison, but more power to it and I think it's a classic and it will be remembered for a very long time."
His many other roles included parts in TV shows Citizen Smith, Chancer and Our Friends in the North, where he played Felix, the father of Christopher Eccleston's character Nicky.
Peter's first major film appearance came in 1964 crime drama Smokescreen, and he acted alongside Frank Sinatra in 1967 feature The Naked Runner.
Over the years he starred alongside Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons (in The French Lieutenant's Woman), and joined Sir Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Christopher Reeve in another Oscar-nominated literary adaption, The Remains of the Day.
Peter also worked twice with Monty Python's Terry Gilliam, on Time Bandits and Brazil, as well as the filmmaker's long-in-development project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.
He had been due to speak about his lengthy film and TV career during an event at central London's Museum of Comedy later this month.
